I think this is a bit of a simplification. North Korea was working on nuclear weapons at least as early as the late 1980's. Bush may have pushed them to accelerate production, but all through most of Clinton's terms they were wrestling with North Korea to get them to slow down or halt the process.

I believe a military coup would be a more likely scenario for NK to change regime.

Ill agree to your point…. North Korea at the very least had capabilities to eventually build a Nuclear weapon during the Clinton era...

if I implied or gave a impression in any manner that North Korea suddenly was able to produce Nuclear weapons...without all the other steps like the Uranium enrichment etc...etc....etc...then I never ment to do so....

we all know making a nuclear weapon is a lengthy process... that just dosent happpen over night... ;) ;) ;)

but you gave an answer that I was looking for my question...

"Bush may have pushed them to accelerate production"

    Let’s play devils advocate

and pretend you are the leader of Iran or North Korea would you dismantle you nuclear program/missiles after what President Bush has said and still saying…. Or on what happened in Iraq?

As most have said… no one believes either side is willing to risk a nuclear war…

The point im trying to make …. Is America does not have the manpower or the willingness to fight another convential war…

So at this point diplomacy is only option…not easy to do when your burning your own bridges…

They're a threat to S. Korea and Japan.

Missles are missles, and they have a lot of artillery pointed at our bases and Seoul.

That's trillions of dollars they can damage plus the numerous casualties of our servicemen stationed there. With our financial markets the way they are, N. Korea is a global security issue.

It'd be suicidal, but if Kim was grasping for a name in the history books, he could cause a lot of ruin knowing that he had far less to lose.

Given our posturing and concessions, our leaders realize that war isn't a preemptive option.
