I'm unable to play that at work, but from what I understand, the worst case scenario would be if the eye hit Freeport. That would put the dirty side (good for women, bad for hurricane) right over downtown Houston.

That would not be good.

 

storm surge sucks. looks pretty bad for league city/clear lake. i've seen that before.

and frankly, 80 miles is generous. 50 miles west would have been awful. you don't need a direct hit...if the storm hits just west of you, you get the backlash of the storm...the dirty side. 50 miles for a storm of that size...just slight moves cause it to do that.

and then there's wind damage.

i'm sure i've mentioned this before...but there's a guy from beaumont who was staying next door to my business partner with his family. he was an accountant who had his own practice. all his clients were wiped out. his business was wiped out. his receivables aren't worth crap. his home has a tree in it. he told my business partner that he lived in a neighborhood very much like the one he and i live in..40 year old homes surrounded by mature 40 year old trees....and that pretty much 1/3 of the homes in his area have a tree in them.

we were down that way not that long ago looking at some property relative to a business deal. most of those homes still have tarps over them, because the insurance companies haven't done jack with them yet.

Makes me relieved I live in SW Houston, and my house is in neither the 100 or 500 year flood planes. That being said, my house would probably be lifted off its foundation by >100 mph winds.

 

A Cat. 4 or greater storm is going to be catastrophic no matter where it hits. You just hope your not in the path and if you are run like hell.

 

cat 4 is the "marker" for our family. we live on the west side of houston. my wife and i agreed a while ago...if a storm goes cat 4 and has a reasonable shot at hitting our area, we're gone.

 

Heck, I was down in Rockport for the storm last year. Perfectly sunny and beautiful days as the storm hit but the surge was a good 5-7 feet all the way down there.

 

Looks like my house will be fine.

 

From the looks of it, my house in Clear Lake would be on the edge of the flooding with a 22.4' storm surge. Good thing we bought flood insurance this year.

 

Anyone living in the Houston metro area should have flood insurance, period. Tropical Allison should have taught everyone that lesson.

 

actually, those areas you see in the cat 4 are the areas that primarily flooded during allison, with some exception of land closer to downtown.

stuff out west didn't flood during allison, despite tremendous rainfall.

He was also the most prepared for the gasoline shortage during Rita.

 

Well twice now in my lifetime the Houston area has been hit by tropical storms that dump in excess of 30 inches of rain on some areas in a short amount of time. If anyone feels like living dangerously, live in Houston without flood insurance.
