Oi, been chilling for the last year or so, mainly just being a sports nut and concentrating on school, but I think its time I start heading back out into a scene.

Any chance if any you know of some good places to sit down and have a drink? piano bars, or any places that feature some acid jazz, trip hop, other types of downtempo stuff?

Cafe Brazil has what they call "Funk Jazz Friday."

Local band comes in & funk jazzes the place up (no vox) all night long. Mostly improvish jazzy types. Some keys based, some guitar based. Usually all good. Adult beverages for those who prefer to get liquored up as well as coffee for those who prefer a caffiene buzz.

No live music or anything like that, but Konomos is a low-key place with some very good "scenery." Its a few bulidings behind from the front porch.

OK, stupid question time, or perhaps I'm just an old man at the ripe age of 27, but what is trip hop?

Go to Marfrellas (the Blue Door) off of Gray near Birraporetti's. Its sooo Low-key that it looks like everyone there is having affairs!

I'm a big fan of trip hop.

Some of the more popular artists you may have heard of are Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba....

I really like Thievery Corporation, they did "Lebanese Blonde" on the Garden State soundtrack. Sneaker Pimps and Gorillaz also.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I'll definately be checking these places.

As for this question about Trip Hop....errr, its downtempo music that typically sounds like a mix of ambience, hip hop, jazz, ethereal, electronica. Like others have said, pretty much the godfathers of the genre are Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky.

If you'd like to get a good feel for the music i suggest these songs,

Portishead - Wandering Star, Roads, Sour Times
    Mono - Life in Mono
    Lamb - Gorecki, Heaven
    Massive Attack- Angel, Butterfly Caught
    Archive - Londinium
Tricky - Hell is around the corner, Overcome
Blue Foundation - As I moved on
DJ Shadow - Building steam with a grain...
Morcheeba - The Sea, Over and Over

and for the hell of it

Lovage - Book of the Month

Are you kidding? Going alone is the best! Great for people watching. Just remember, the cardinal rule there is to make sure you always keep both hands off the table, preferably on your lap.

Great for peoplewatching....not good for picking up women, unless they've just had a fight with their date/boyfriend.
