In 2017, taking an anti-Nazi stance is somehow a controversial political statement.

In a new promotional tweet for its upcoming video game, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, developer Bethesda shared a video clip of Nazi soldiers marching, with the caption “Make America Nazi-Free Again. #NoMoreNazis #Wolf2.”

The video itself is just a few seconds long, depicting orderly lines of Nazi soldiers (the game’s main foe) with the text “Not my America” superimposed on top of it.

The Wolfenstein account’s co-opting of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign slogan, “Make America great again,” has rubbed some of its more conservative players the wrong way.

“Oh wow, what a clever marketing trick: tapping into hysterical leftist power fantasy,” one Twitter user wrote, according to a screenshot posted by @MiraVylash. “So current. So subtly political. Wow. Go ****yourselfs [sic].”

“Cool,” another user wrote. “Didn’t know Bethesda teamed with SJWs and ANTIFA!”

Conservative backlash against Bethesda isn’t limited to Twitter. As of this writing, a post on the front page of Gamergate subreddit /r/KotakuInAction reads, “Wolfenstein 2 is supposed to be non-political but is blatantly likened to Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, Twitter replies proceed to go on about the alt-right and modern Nazis.”

The comments on this Reddit post are filled with anti-Semitic jokes and conspiracy theories. But generally, these redditors seem to take issue with the ways in which Bethesda and many news outlets (including Mic) have noted that Wolfenstein suddenly feels more politically relevant than when the series debuted in 1992.

“Don’t inject leftist propaganda and take advantage of current events in our political landscape to try and sell your product and expect anyone with half a brain to not notice,” one /r/KotakuInAction member wrote.

“I’d prefer if they went full boneheaded satire with literally making Trump hitlerrobotman [sic], at least it would be kind of funny,” another user wrote. But this baiting of Trump supporters to get mad about associating their beliefs with Nazism, in order to say ‘whoa dude you dislike this so you must support NAZIS!?!!!’ is aggravating.”

According to an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Bethesda is aware of the series’ newfound relevance in the wake of the rise of white nationalism in the U.S.

“We’re certainly aware of current events in America and how they relate to some of the themes in Wolfenstein II,” Pete Hines, vice president of public relations and marketing at Bethesda, told GamesIndustry.biz. “Wolfenstein has been a decidedly anti-Nazi series since the first release more than 20 years ago. We aren’t going to shy away from what the game is about. We don’t feel it’s a reach for us to say Nazis are bad and un-American, and we’re not worried about being on the right side of history here.”

This is in line with what Bethesda has been saying about the new Wolfenstein for a while now — that the latest game wasn’t conceived with the rise of white supremacy and the alt-right in mind, but it acknowledges the implications of shooting Nazis in a video game in 2017.

“In Wolfenstein’s case, it’s pure coincidence that Nazis are marching in the streets of America this year,” Hines said. “And it’s disturbing that the game can be considered a controversial political statement at all.”

It's what happens when some people work so hard to de-humanize the left. The by-product is that in the eyes of some, they are re-humanizing Nazis.

Does anyone else get tired of the news reporting about random Internet users as if their anonymous fringe opinions matter?

When they invade peaceful little towns and cause riots and kill people, kinda matters no matter how much you'd like to ignore it.

Yeah, but that's actual news to report. People are there in public, faces attached to names that are standing for what they believe in (whether right or wrong).

An anonymous person on the Internet can say anything or be anyone, but that's inconsequential.

Anyone outraged with this is a stupid snowflake. But I don't really see anyone of any significances outraged except from mentally challenged twitter users.

I don't see much of a connection to Trump in that ad. How is a generic slogan like "Not My America" a riff on "Make America Great Again"?

one of my favorite games of ass time, return to castle wolfenstein for xbox. I still play it.
    nerdy gaming sturry, brah.

I think return to castle wolfenstein had all references to nahtzis removed when it was released in 2001 in Germany or it was banned, one of the two.

Congratulations for falling right into their trap. Bethesda just spent millions making this new game, they want to sell and need a lot of marketing. How do they rise above the pack? I know, get free coverage in the newspaper by doing something that gets people riled. The journalists just need to cherrypick a couple of quotes from some nest of neo-Nazis on the internet to fill out the article. We can get a couple million impressions on the article, plus we'll seed it in social media so people will talk about it in internet forums. Then a bunch of people will know Wolfenstein is coming out and they'll want to play it. The neo-Nazis noticed and knew exactly what the plan was, but fell into the trap anyway.

The US version of the game was put on index, mainly because of Nazi symbols (Hakenkreuz etc), which are forbidden to be used here in Germany.
They then produced a version without those symbols, but game was still put on index for over the top violence etc. This was lifted in 2008 though.

German laws were pretty strict back in the days and there was a ton of debate on video games, especially after we had two school massacres in 2002 and media immediately jumped on Counter Strike etc.
There are two categories (A and B), games categorized as A can only be sold to 18+yr olds and not advertized, plus stores can not put them on shelves. Category B is for more serious cases, these games can be put forward to courts and made entirely illegal to sell. There's a nice explanation and list of both categories here, 2nd link is for completely banned games. The 1st list is sorted by time frame (click on each year), there are currently 408 games on the entire index and you'll see that even huge games like Fallout 3, GTA, Call of Duty, Borderlands etc are on it.
