under the Les, the real owner of the Rockets was China...we were the Beijing Rockets, not the Houston Rockets

Tilman will own the team for less than 5 years. Its not that big of a deal.

 

There's a lot going on here that happened before Tilman took over ….

The getting a star without tanking thing really put this team behind the 8 ball.

That means your starting point isn't a high quality young star on that is cost effective for his first two contracts.

Take Milwaukee for instance - Their best player is on his first max deal (19.94%) and that's a 7% difference in total cap usage between he and Harden (26.87%). It's a lot easier to put better pieces around him than it is Harden and stay under the tax line. 7% of the cap is $10m or so …. and that can net you a quality player.

The other thing is that they had already made the acquisition of CP3/WB eating up another 27% of the cap and then factor in the extensions of Capela and EG …. there's another 20% of your total.

All that wouldn't have mattered if the owner wasn't so dead set against going into the tax because they had good players around Harden / CP3 - problem is when those players hit free agency , they didn't have any financial avenues to replace them that didn't involve going into the tax.

Not using the MLE's …. not retaining free agents or at least working S&T's to recoup some financial flexibility …. all in the name of ducking the tax.


Tilman's the kind of owner that's only going to win a championship after tanking and getting a stud in the draft on a cheap contract then putting the rest of the pieces around him.

To win it all in this no tanking scenario - You have to be willing to spend well beyond the tax line.


As for why Les sold …. who knows , maybe he just got tired of it all. Yeah , it would have been nice to end up with an owner with deeper pockets …. but we got what we got. Morey's gotta make it work and if anyone can figure it out , its him. He's already done things that seemed impossible over the years.
Maybe Tilman wont be so against tanking for a couple years after this current team comes to its conclusion …. and Morey can start fresh from the draft instead of behind the 8 ball in terms of finances.

 

Didn’t Tilman borrow a bunch of money from his family to buy the Rockets? Technically not one owner IMO, one family owner perhaps.
