Are we sure we're defining "arbitrary" the same way?

    ar·bi·trar·y   /ˈɑrbɪˌtrɛri/ Show Spelled
    [ahr-bi-trer-ee] Show IPA
    adjective, noun, plural -trar·ies.
    –adjective
    1. subject to individual will or judgment without restriction; contingent solely upon one's discretion: an arbitrary decision.
    2. decided by a judge or arbiter rather than by a law or statute.
    3. having unlimited power; uncontrolled or unrestricted by law; despotic; tyrannical: an arbitrary government.
    4. capricious; unreasonable; unsupported: an arbitrary demand for payment.
    5. Mathematics . undetermined; not assigned a specific value: an arbitrary constant.

I don't think you can say where we finish in conference or in division is arbitrary. Where we finish is where we finish...that's like saying our win/loss record is arbitrary.

What exactly are people upset about?

Morey lied and Soloman called him out, what exactly is the big deal?

    They don't like Soloman . .. they like Morey . . . .
so Soloman must be admonished for questioning Morey

Just so everyone does realize, Morey did not invent the word asset. He's also not the only NBA front office guy that throws the term around freely. I did what "King" did and googled a couple GM names with the word asset real quick and here's a bit of what I found. Granted, I haven't heard any of these guys ever denying using the word, but seriously, who cares? It's a common term around the NBA and a GM should not ever have to defend his use of it. Morey shouldn't have said he's never used it, but it also shouldn't have even been a talking point.

Danny Ainge- "Any way you look at it, Ray is an asset," Ainge said. "He's an asset to us as a player right now and, if we don't trade him, for the rest of the season. If we do trade him, he's an asset in that we will get back equal talent. If he ends up as a free agent, he's an asset because maybe we can use him in a sign-and-trade deal. And if he just leaves, he's an asset because his salary comes off our books. We can use some of that to go out and get someone with the midlevel exception."

Mark Cuban- "We always pay attention. Carmelo's a great player. I don't think we have the assets they need or that they want. They want a boat load of draft picks and other things. And that's not something that we have. With that said, whenever there's a big trade like that, particularly if it's a multi-team trade. You always need another team to help you make the numbers work. I think that creates an opportunity for us. When a team really wants a great player like Carmelo, They'll get to where their backs are against the wall and need that last piece to make that trade work. Hopefully, that's where we can squeeze in and pick up a piece."

Donnie Walsh- "There is such a thing as drafting assets. I don't know if that is what he's doing," Walsh said of new Timberwolves general manager David Kahn.

Ernie Grunfeld- “When Ted came over, he gave the mandate to try to rebuild through the draft. I think we’ve achieved a lot in a year,” Ernie Grunfeld said. “We have a lot of work ahead of us, and we do have some assets and we have to continue to work hard, have a good draft, add another piece or two in the draft and see what the new rules are with free agency and see what happens, but we have put ourselves in a flexible position from a financial standpoint."

Jerry Colangelo- “Even the notion that we didn't get anything for the departure of Chris Bosh is a little bit of a misconception in that we still have what's known as the trade exception as a possible means of getting better or acquisition of assets, players or assets; and we have our pick back, which was given up previously, and another pick that could potentially be packaged or utilized in some other way."

yep, I have a feeling most people did not even read the article

its not the usual Dick Justice/Solomon/McClain made up stories that have no research or insight

the article is almost entirely Morey quotes, not sure how that makes anyone upset

I like Morey, and Soloman IS a troll. But I can't say I mind him clowning on Morey for claiming to have never used "assets." He's totally used it lots, as anyone addicted to Clutchfans could easily tell you.

    My exact thoughts as well.

I believe what Morey meant when he said he never used the word "asset" is that he never referred to current players as assets - not draft picks, cash, player rights, or even a player's skill set.

Morey has to know that he's used the word asset quite often, so I don't see how he could have meant anything else.

I'm positive "we're" not, and your post proves it.

Now, getting back on thread topic, as is usually the case, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

On one hand, it appears as though Solomon nailed Morey on this one. It seems like a stretch to suggest that his use of the word asset only referred to draft picks, player rights or other non-player assets.

On the other hand, he was being attacked, backed into a corner in a very public forum. It would be natural for him to try to defend himself in this situation, right or wrong.

Yes, he is a GM...it is his job to treat the entire model as a business. But as has been pointed out lately, he could stand to use some lessons in human-to-human contact.

The truth lies somewhere in between.

Solomon sure seems to have a thing for Morey. Neutral journalism at its best.

i read the paper yesterday. the paper is useless and meaningless. I wasted my time to read it. it made me mad. i don't know how he still keeps his job. i don't believe any professional journalists would pick a word and argue with another person about how many times the word is used and the definition of this word. what he did has nothing to do with bball and was exactly same as clinton's "IS".

now, i just got back from a trip and turned on my computer. what i saw is really amazing me. the paper attracted so many ppl here to figure out the definition. is the board for rox bball? i didn't read any post on this thread. i am writing my post to tell all of you to stop wasting your time. that's all i want to say.

Yeah, he calls out the station for their over-support. But then over-supports his old colleague calling him "my man".

So its about picking sides. Then trying to be "objective" through it?

    Trollism > Journalism.

Whenever I read Chronicle articles, I don't even see all the bad stuff people usually comment on. To me they're just functional articles like a publication is supposed to have.

Nitpicking or not, its not just that he told the factual truth about Morey (which he did, Morey got owned). Its you can see the flaws in his attempt for page hits. Like over-exaggerating the "last place team" thing. Even Stephen A Smith would think twice before resorting to that method.

(Though I don't follow the staff's writing patterns, I know enough about Solomon that he'd also put US the fans under fire claiming we're being "apologists" for thinking we're not a last place team.)

Division or not, we were last in something. Two years ago we were talking about how close we were to being first in our division. We're not even remotely close now...

Obviously I was referring to his method of criticism as arbitrary...not the fact we finished last in our division.

It does not matter whether it is OK to use word asset on players, the important thing is that Morey is not honest from what I read from those words.

In the first years of Morey he has been all over the radio and TV. He made sure he was heard and self-promoting his ways. When those ways haven't worked (the past 2 years) he is now in defense mode, still on the radio and TV, self promoting that there is a bigger plan. I'm glad he is getting the criticism he deserves. I do believe his heart is in it and he believes that his way is the right way. It just hasn't worked out the way he thought it would.

The Rockets had to work without Yao and Tmac for the first half.

Ignoring the obvious makes this board reek.

What part of last in the division do you not understand. Yeah he is using a stat to bring a more negative light on Morey just as the pro Adelman guys say we finished with a better record more than half the teams in the league. Which doesn't change the fact we are a lottery team.

We are a last place team in our division. That IMO is better than New Orleans Memphis right now. But that doesn't change the fact we finished behind them.

We our last in our division.
