Smart people, dumb decisions: Asking Adelman to babysit a coach-in-waiting was idiotic

So Jonathan Feigen tells us more of the story behind why Rick Adelman and Daryl Morey couldn’t work it out.

    This is why? Seriously?

If you want a divorce, just say you want a divorce. Don’t ask for an open marriage. Don’t try to move in a pretty young coed to spice things up. Just pack up and leave.

At the risk of again bringing the Internet drones who worship at the feet of Morey back again – demanding that Adelman to put a coach-in-waiting on his staff has to have been one of the dumbest ideas ever by of one of the smartest men most of us know.

(Don’t take the “worship at the feet” thing too seriously, folks. Morey finds the “In Daryl We Believe” sentiment to be almost as ludicrous as I do. I don’t know when the phrase was first used in sports, but the strongest in the last decade is “In Bill We Trust,” by Patriots fans pointing to Bill Belichick. Don’t make me go Lloyd Bentsen on you people.)

I’ve said many times I am against the coach-in-waiting concept in general anyway. There are too many factors to consider when hiring a coach to hire one before you are technically looking for one.

And that is even in situations in which the candidate is a hot commodity, as in the case with the University of Texas and former defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

No way could you convince me that UT would have trouble finding a qualified candidate for any position, so it shouldn’t have to offer a future head coaching position to anybody on the planet, let alone an assistant coach.

You’re creating a soap opera effect for no good reason.

This thing with the Rockets goes a step or two further. We’re talking about hiring an outsider to replace a head coach (and replace somebody else on his staff first), while the coach is still coaching.

If Morey wants a flunky to do his dirty work, then hire the flunky as the head coach.

If he wants said flunky to hang around Adelman to learn how he does things, he would be better off giving him tapes of all the games and practices and letting him learn from them.

But forcing a guy onto a staff while pushing aside a loyal assistant the head coach believes is doing a fine job – if that is indeed what Morey suggested – is … idiotic.

No sane coach would agree to such terms.

Rick Adelman might be getting up in years, but last I could tell, he isn’t having sanity issues.

Please get it do not mis-quote. The proper phrase is "In Morey We Trust!"
And riddle me this... why would we want Daryl Morey as GM if we did not trust him?

Hey Jerome! Wake up and drink some damn coffee before you type this crap. And for us so called Morey Worshipers, many of us believe letting RA walk was a mistake.

Jerome the Fool has the comparison wrong. The Rockets didn't ask Adelman for an open marriage, they are asking their elderly first wife to tutor an incoming second wife in ways to please them after the first wife dies. This is not gallant.

    The Houston Rockets

Where finishing last in your division doesn't really mean last (except maybe in the mathematical sense which of course is completely arbitrary) because to use won-loss records as a measure of success or failure is completely arbitrary in and of the fact that by doing so, said action does not accurately reflect upon or obscures the reality that said team, the Rockets, actually finished 14th out of 30 teams which is to be taken as irrevocable proof that this is by no means a "last place team". It is further noted that anyone who dares to use this team's divisonal standings as a measure of success is to be damned for all time as an illiterate, Jerome Solomon homosexual hater fool who is deemed unworthy for not appreciating the glory and magnificence of Morey the Wizard - the mangod responsible for putting together said team that has now finished in the first division of the NBA for the second year in a row - an accomplishment for which the citizens of this fair BBS will cherish and celebrate for untold years to come.

The Rockets are rebuilding get used to it. Give it time. Let DM do work. In a few years the rockets will be back on top. In the mean time stop hating on DM. The Rockets had a very respectable season for a rebuilding year and played some exciting basketball. The rockets lost their two all-stars, and we managed to pull out a winning record this season. Look long term. Look past the haters. Look past anything Jerome Solomon says about the rockets. He has a grudge against Morey and is campaigning to run him out of town. The rockets have one of the top front offices in the league, his article is full of biases against Morey and the front office. Morey continually pulls quality nba talent late in drafts. The majority of his trades and free agent signings have had a positive effect on the team and the teams future. He has the rockets financially sound and rebuilding at a fast pace. His sports blogs display blatant biases and he spins facts to prove radical points. Divisional standings are almost pointless in the nba because they dont take effect playoff seeding.

i think you missed giving a certain person credit. It seems like Morey was on the court every night calling plays and making lineup changes as this team is probably as unstable as can be.

And while he said they want to "Rebuild" he also stated that the rockets will be "In the playoffs next season." the guys playing a damned politician, he says what he thinks will make people happy. and his dronies end up following.
