A few of my buddies and myself will be heading down to Jamaica for Spring Break and I have heard from various friends and relatives that Jamaica is relatively more dangerous or violent than other Caribbean destinations. I was wondering if any of yall have ever been down there or have heard any stories as to whether Jamaica really is that dangerous. We're planning on staying at the resort most of the time but I mean you never know what happens when we're actually down there. Any suggestions as to how not get killed or kidnapped are greatly appreciated!

You'll be fine. Spend most of your time at the resort. Just stay off the streets after about midnight, and don't go wandering around by yourself at night. It'll be fun.

    Where in Negril?

There's some cool places in town, but otherwise, stay at the resort.

Well we're staying at a resort called RIU. I have heard about a night club called "The Jungle" that we will probably be checking out but other than that I haven't heard too much. Well, also something about Rick's cafe and jerk chicken

I've traveled through some third world countries in Asia like India, Nepal, Thailand and Sri Lanka and when I went to Jamaica a few years ago it reminded me of traveling through India except with just more tourists present. The only other difference is their isn't much crime you hear about in those Asian third world countries.

I was in Negril, Jamaica for my honeymoon 2 months ago and it was great!! Same thing others said, just don't be stupid and wonder by yourself at 3 AM on the streets. We stayed at The Caves and it is just west of Rick's Cafe (same amazing view) before the lighthouse. It was the most amazing place I ever stayed at and absolutley loved it!!! Go cliff diving!! Beware of people asking you if you need pharmaceuticals. :p

    Have fun!!!

"Stay inside the confines of the compound and you will not be harmed."

Yeah, I would rather go to the BVIs etc.

Jamaica's alright, if you wanna get in the middle of a knife fight
Jamaica's alright, if you wanna get AIDS or dysentery
Jamaica's alright, if you wanna be mugged or murdered
    Jamaica's alright, if you're a misogynist, or a homophobe

Jamaica's alright, if you like only one kind of music
Jamaica's alright, if you like small bananas and spiders
Jamaica's alright, if you wanna buy drugs from your hotel room
Jamaica's alright, if you want your hand lopped off by a machete

I heard there was a lot of mar1juana in Jamaica. As a result, I'm sure there's quite a bit of crime/criminals. Probably serial killers and terrorists...

The gangs in Jamaica make the LA Crips look like the Jets from West Side Story.
