got up, got out of bed, I ran a comb across my head........ ------------------ Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
Woke up, fell out of bed, Dragged a comb across my head Geez, get it right! ------------------ I always thought "With my talent, it's only a matter of time before I'm discovered". Now I think "With my talent, it's only a matter of time before I'm found out".
"Cellophane flowers of yellow and green, towering over your head" ------------------ One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.
The song was inspired by a picture Julian painted at school. He brought it home and showed it to his father (John) who asked what it was. Julian replied "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" ------------------ One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.
PLAYBOY: Where did "Lucy in the Sky" come from? LENNON: My son Julian came in one day with a picture he painted about a school friend of his named Lucy. He had sketched in some stars in the sky and called it "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," Simple. PLAYBOY: The other images in the song weren't drug-inspired? LENNON: The images were from "Alice in Wonderland." It was Alice in the boat. She is buying an egg and it turns into Humpty Dumpty. The woman serving in the shop turns into a sheep and the next minute they are rowing in a rowing boat somewhere and I was visualizing that. There was also the image of the female who would someday come save me -- a "girl with kaleidoscope eyes" who would come out of the sky. It turned out to be Yoko, though I hadn't met Yoko yet. So maybe it should be "Yoko in the Sky with Diamonds." Complete Playboy interview: http://www.bcpl.net/~rick/lennon.html ------------------ One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.
This may be true, but it's pretty coincidental, wouldn't you say? There was a big controversy at the time, as I'm sure you know, about whether the song was about an acid trip. This was the period when they were experimenting with drugs, and you have to admit that the lyrics are pretty suggestive. http://www.clic.net/~dany/beatles/cha_xx00/chansons/litsw_tb.htm I guess we'll never know for sure. It's John and Paul's word against the circumstantial evidence. It doesn't much matter one way or the other as far as I'm concerned. It's just an interesting bit of music trivia. ------------------
When was that interview? Not long before he died I guess. Drugs weren't quite as taboo then, so he may have been more likely to own up to the LSD connection if it was true. I thought this exchange was interesting too. PLAYBOY: Some people have accused you of playing to the media. First you become a recluse, then you talk selectively to the press because you have a new album coming out. LENNON: That's ridiculous. People always said John and Yoko would do anything for the publicity. In the Newsweek article[September 29, 1980], it says the reporter asked us, "Why did you go underground?" Well, she never asked it that way and I didn't go underground. I just stopped talking to the press. It got to be pretty funny. I was calling myself Greta Hughes or Howard Garbo through that period. But still the gossip items never stopped. We never stopped being in the press, but there seemed to be more written about us when we weren't talking to the press than when we were. So did they play the media or not? I sure it wasn't all contrived, but I suspect there was some element of gamesmanship. Many of his lyrics suggested hidden meanings. During the Beatles era, they got a lot of press from that. "John is dead …" etc. So, if "Lucy…" was really about LSD, would he necessarily say so? Or, would he leave some reason to doubt, so that 35 years later, as few guys on a basketball BBS could still be debating it? ------------------
umm… make that "Paul is dead." Freudian slip I guess. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Grizzled (edited June 01, 2001).]
Lyrics are what you make them. Thats what art is. Just ask the king of misunderstood lyrics, Bob Dylan. Even if John came out and said "No it was not about LSD" there would still be people who didn't believe him. Anyone who knows anything about John Lennon knows he was very influenced by Lewis Carroll. He borrowed from his use of words frequently. And that interview was done 2 weeks before he was shot ------------------ One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor. Lyrics are what you make them. Thats what art is. Just ask the king of misunderstood lyrics, Bob Dylan. Yup, but what we're talking about is what his intent was in writing them. Anyone who knows anything about … …John Lennon knows he was very influenced by Lewis Carroll. He borrowed from his use of words frequently. Alice in Wonderland is widely suspected as having been inspired by a drug induced hallucination. So the song wasn't inspired by drugs, it was inspired by literature that was inspired by drugs!?!? Or was it? Is there any proof that Carroll used drugs? Not as far as I know. Doesn't this sound like just the kind of game Lennon would play? Whether intentional or not, the guy was a PR genius. He had some other talents too. And that interview was done 2 weeks before he was shot Wow! Thanks for digging up that link. That's a real piece of history. I'm out. ------------------
Julian may have drawn the picture (art can be found anywhere) but I would hazard to guess that LSD fueled the lyrics. "And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make!" IMO one of the best lines in Rock and Roll! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Yup, but what we're talking about is what his intent was in writing them. All I can tell you is my interpritation of them. If I knew his intent, I would be writing for The Rolling Stone or some other music rag. So the song wasn't inspired by drugs, it was inspired by literature that was inspired by drugs!?!? Once again...it was inspired by Julian's painting. ------------------ One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor. [This message has been edited by BobFinn* (edited June 01, 2001).]
This is Paul writing about his first acid trip: Got to Get You Into My Life I was alone, I took a ride, I didn’t know what I would find there. Another road where maybe I Could see another kind of mind there. Ooh then I suddenly see you, Ooh did I tell you I need you Ev’ry single day of life? You didn’t run, you didn’t lie, You knew I wanted just to hold you, And had you gone, you knew in time We’d meet again for I had to hold you. Ooh you were meant to be near me, Ooh and I want to hear me, Say we’ll be together ev’ry day. Got to get you into my life. What can I do, what can I be? When I’m with you I want to stay there. If I’m true I’ll never leave, And if I do I know the way there. Ooh then I suddenly see you, Ooh did I tell you I need you Ev’ry single day of my life? Got to get you into my life. Got to get you into my life. I was alone, I took a ride, I didn’t know what I would find there. Another road where maybe I Could see another kind of mind there. Ooh then I suddenly see you, Ooh did I tell you I need you Ev’ry single day of life? What are you doing to my life? ------------------ One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.
