Just wondering because Luther's pretty much disappeared and this Pappa's place just kind of came out of nowhere (since 1967??).

I saw it downtown where the old Luther's used to be, so my guess was a name change?

No Pappa's is much better than Luther's ever was. Mind you it's not even close to the best in the city but it is way better than Luthers.

absolutely. I think Luther's lost out because the competition was too good around the city. Difficult to open a Tex-Mex or BBQ place in Houston, because there are others doing it so well.

Rudy's can't invade the city fast enough.

Pappa's is better than Luther's in general, but the meats aren't that out of this world.

I hope I never get BBQ at a non-mom and pop type place like Pappas or Pahppuhs as Andre Ware likes to say.

Pappas bought Luther's a couple of years ago and gradually turned them all into Pappas BBQ.

Joe's BBQ in Alvin blows both places away.

As far as chains go, yes, they do. Their meats are good, but the sauce makes it great. Have you had Smokey Moe's yet? IIRC, you're in Austin. There's a few around town. It's damn good.

It's BBQ. If it wasn't low brow, I'm not sure I'd want it.

There are Luther's off 290 and 45 South.

I have not been there in years. I LOVE Pappas! YUMMY.

Pappas was The Brisket House, which was independent and really good, and Pappas didn't make any changes in quality when the took over. They upgraded Luthers to Brisket House quality.

Not anymore, they are all Pappa's now.

What seems odd to me is that Drewdog lives in Houston and seems like he has never heard of Pappa's before. That's just weird.

Pappa's BBQ/Pappasitos/Pappadeux/Yia Yia Mary's/Pappa's Seafood are all the same family.

Huh, I could have swore that I saw "Luther's" instead of "Pappa's" this morning on the way to work. Now, I want some BBQ for dinner. :)

I'm sitting in a Pappa's BBQ right now, and i can say without a doubt that it is definitely not Luther's. I will also say that I'm never very impressed with the food here.
