Hollinger said it right in a recent article.

    All-star voting should be:

    point
    wing
    wing
    big
    big

    NOT

    guard
    guard
    forward
    forward
    center

i don't think it's as much the China vote or a popularity contest, I see it as the fans direct statement that the voting system is jacked up. it was like when they voted in Iverson when he wasn't even getting any play time.

it's a big middle finger to the whole voting system.
(that and the 1 billion votes from china)

It makes a lot of sense

The fans are basically saying, because no other centers in the West deserves to be a starting all-star, we are just gonna put in a guy that used to deserve it

On the side note I think Gasol should've entered as center and starting

On another note I think Yao Ming will still be voted in even if he is retired..

Why didn't any of other WC center candidates complain for this?

What makes a point so much important than a center? I'd rather see 3 backcourt/wing, 2 big.

Surely you can see that in today's meta-game of NBA basketball, the line between center and power forward is much more blurry than the line between a PG and a SG/SF. There's a reason why there are basically no centers behind Yao in the west, while you can clearly differentiate between PGs like CP3, DWill, Billups, etc. vs wing players like Durant, Kobe, etc. And passing wing players are still quite rare, even if some of the best players in the NBA tend to be wing scorer/distributors.

If we're going with 3 groups, I agree with Hollinger that big/wing/point is the best way to go. With 2 groups, I'd go with forwards/guards myself.

Why the heck is Melo in the all star game? Since when did he play power forward?   That should be Dirk, Pau or Duncan.

I can't believe people are actually b****ing about this..

Look the All-Star game is a POPULARITY CONTEST, its not about who deserves it(that's what all-nba teams are for), PEOPLE vote for who THEY WANT TO SEE. Which means people wanted to see, Yao, even if it means in a suit. So quit your b****ing..

On thread topic: I'm happy for the big fella...

Under no definition of deserve do 4 of those guys make it over Yao. If your definition of deserve is that they're All-NBA candidates, then 0 of them deserve it. If your definition of deserve is that they've done more on the floor than Yao then all 25+ centers in the west deserve it.

The only center in the west that is All-NBA type player is Chandler but he wasn't on the list, so it's obvious why Yao won. NBA fans aren't stupid, they know they'll get a good replacement for Yao instead of having to watch some scrub like Bynum.
