    My friends,
AMC will be showing a 24 hour marathon of the best war films ever created, hosting will be john Mccain.
I was just wondering which war films do you guys enjoy the most?

My favourites are A bridge too far, saving private ryan, and a thin red line.
I even love movies where the war is just a backdrop in the plot, like Casablanca and atonement. Love them.

*maybe a cleverly disguised what are you doing for memorial day thread.

Technically a miniseries, but Band of Brothers, and it isn't even close.

I know this is random, but if you got a chance and like to watch war films, you may want to give "City of Life and Death" a chance.

It is directed by LU Chuan, a Director from Mainland China. Please let me know your comments if you have watched the movie.

    Conquistador,

I know you're from El Salvador. What did you think of Stone's "Salvador"?

Agreed, but I do have Saving Private Ryan as a close 2nd. I spent most of this past Saturday watching all of BoB again.

I'm a huge fan of the genre and always have been, in large part because I grew up in a neighborhood in SE Houston built for vets on the GI bill... working/lower middle class families on their way up, getting their first homes, and the kids played "war" all the time. You switched around as to who were the "good guys" and the bad guys," but everyone always asked, more than once, "What did your father do during The War?" The War being WWII and, to a lesser extent, Korea. My Dad was a movies nut and we went at least 3 times a week. Once or twice to a drive-in, the local Santa Rosa Theatre, and a trip downtown on the weekends to one of the greta movie palaces, followed by dogs at the original James Coney Island. Good times, and saw every war movie that came out. Also watched Early Bird Theatre on Sunday mornings with Dad, while everyone else was at church, and many of the classics I list were seen during some serious quality time with my father.

Some of my favorites, off the top of my head?

    Battleground
    Stalag 17
    Paths of Glory
The Bridge on the River Kwai
    Twelve O'Clock High
The Charge of the Light Brigade
    Beau Geste
    The Dawn Patrol
    Sergeant York
    They Were Expendable
    From Here to Eternity
    The Bridges at Toko-Ri
    Run Silent, Run Deep
    Pork Chop Hill
    The Guns of Navarone
    Lawrence of Arabia
    The Great Escape
    Zulu
    The Dirty Dozen
    Castle Keep
    M*A*S*H*
    Patton
    A Bridge Too Far
    The Blue Max
    The Deer Hunter
    Apocalypse Now
    Breaker Morant
    Das Boot
    Full Metal Jacket
    Platoon
    The Last of the Mohicans
    The Thin Red Line
    Saving Private Ryan
    The Dawn Patrol
    Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo
    The Desert Fox
    Sink the Bismark!
    The Alamo
    The Longest Day
    The Battle of Algiers
    Cross of Iron
    Gallipoli

Several others that could have been included (and many I forgot), like Casablanca and The African Queen, which I left out because they are more love stories, really, but could easily be close to the top of anyone's list. Also some, like The Manchurian Candidate, that could be included and are excellent. Man, so many good flicks and I've forgotten several! :)
