Those records are sick. SMU had just returned from the most severe penalty ever - death. Their team consisted of freshmen, sophomores, and walk ons. The SMU coach refused to shake the hand of John Jenkins afterwards. 2001 Cougars Karma baby!
I was at the UH-SMU game where UH scored 95 points. This was SMU's first season after the death penalty. Their defense was young. They did however play short coverage pass defense the whole game. They had their defensive backs right up on the line of scrimmage. They were playing to take away the short pass and inviting the Cougars to throw deep. Ware only played the first half. Klingler came in after halftime and continued the carnage. Klingler really aired it out on a few. The Cougars didn't know how to run out the clock. That is the one draw back of doing the R&S all the time. The Oilers got hurt by this in the imfamous Buffalo game. No team should blow a 32 point lead in less then a half of football if they have any sort of a ground game. The freshmen on that SMU team I believe got their revenge three years later by beating UH when they were seniors. The Rams only occasionally use R&S packages. Ricky Proehl is brought in as the fourth receiver, but normally they use a tight-end with three receivers and one back. High octane, but versatile.
Oddly enough, I think the 1,000 yard game came against Arizona St. Who may have been ranked at the time. UH scored like 65 points in that game.
You can't be running up the score if you're using your reserves and simply running your offense. If the other team can't beat your reserves, that's their problem. Should the 2nd and 3rd strings not get any practice just to prevent scoring a bunch of points?
Plus, it's a freaking game. If the SMU coach was offended at getting 95 points scored on him, maybe he should have coached a better game. I don't care if your team is the little sisters of the poor - you have to screw up pretty bad to get burned like that. And it's not like SMU got that "death penalty" because they were a bunch of nice guys, or because they were playing fair. I have a hard time feeling sorry for a team decimated by the NCAA for cheating.
I think that David Klingler is the head football coach at Second Baptist. My nephew plays there. Craig Reynolds is the Athletic Director.
I see your point. No need to feel sorry for anyone. Then people (UH fans) need to stop calling out Mack for telling Simms to throw for the endzone with 0:02 left in the game with UT up 48-0. We were just running our offense like UH did 10 years ago. I guess that doesn't qualify as running up the score.
I believe in the Southern Miss - Florida Game last year Florida rushed for -76 yards or something of that nature .
The death penalty? So, the NCAA just axes the football program completely? Damn, you must have to do something REALLY bad to get that...How many times has this been implemented?
Well, I think Jenkins was much more likely to consciously run up the score than Pardee, but part of it WAS the prolific nature of the offense. And don't feel sorry for us UH Alums. We f****** PUNISHED UT four or five straight years with the R & S. Nothing better than that! Especially when one is THE state U and one is primarily a commuter U. It was PARDEE time in the Astrodome! As for the title results with the R & S...UH was ranked as high as #3 in the country with the R&S, and that's pretty damn good for a school with its support base. And keep in mind that every NFL team to use the system sucked before it was installed, and got a sh*tload better much quicker with the R & S. What NFL team that ran the R & S had a good defense? NONE. Although most people blame the Buffalo game on the R & S, I think that's silly considering the high number of variables that fell exactly Buffalo's way after Dishman's INT TD return. There were OFFENSIVE scores, which the DEFENSE couldn't stop, and special teams plays that had nothing to do with the R&S. Sure it was part the offenses fault, but I don't think you can put the loss soley at the door of the R &S. And Barry Sanders said it was the best offense he ever played in. Can you imagine M Faulk as the Superback? Holy f***** Toledo. (that's not an insult to ALL the Toledo's, just the one in Ohio)...
Only implemented in the SMU case. SMU had basically accumulated violation after violation and the NCAA wanted to make a statement. SMU was a national power in the early 80s with the Pony Express (E Dickerson and Craig James). The death penalty has proven impossible to recover from, however, and subsequently the NCAA has not pursued the ultimate sanction.
