I'm seeing people on Twitter claim that "Islam is feminist". A religion founded by a 7th-century illiterate slaving-owning warlord who married a 6-year old when he was 50, is now considered a "feminist". Oh, by the way, he had "sex" with his child-bride when she was just 4-years older. Feminist.
Forcing women to wear hijab with the threat of violence and/or social abandonment is as feminist as it gets.
So now a post about Omar has become a general Muslim bashing thread. Yup, I was right, it was never about what Omar tweeted or said. She's Muslim, so she shouldn't be in Congress.
I've been googling around and reading various right-wing blogs and think tanks on why Sharia is incompatible with the Constitution. The most common argument I'm finding (like this one) is that sharia criminalizes things we don't criminalize and/or are actually protected behaviors in our Bill of Rights. What I think is wrong about this argument is that the law from the Old Testament also criminalizes these same things, and we don't say Judaism is incompatible with the Constitution. So adultery is punished with stoning in the Quran; it's also punished with stoning in Leviticus. Likewise, apostasy is punishable by death in Deuteronomy just as it is in the Quran. Likewise, the subordination of women is prescribed in both. I don't see Jews agitating to be allowed to stone people in the US according to their Law. Of course, I don't see Muslims doing that either. But Jews do observe the many other parts of Levitical law, like not working on the Sabbath and not eating unclean foods and holding wedding ceremonies. And we recognize they have a right to observe these things to the extent they can be accommodated under the Constitution and US law. So how is it that Levitical law can be made to be compatible with Constitution, but Sharia cannot?
Having many right wing friends who share plenty of "American is being taken over by Sharia law" posts on Facebook, one of the most common things they get confused about are marraige and banking issues handled by non-binding religious arbiters. But you see the same thing within Catholic and Jewish communities in the US and they are all non-binding and cannot go against the constitution. And yes, about 2/3rds of the ten commandments are in direct contradiction of the US bill of rights.
