Maybe for UH but bad on a national level. Doesn't bode well if they want to be more than a spring board like Sumlin was. Still, a great hire nonetheless. They might also be willing to open the purse strings in a couple years if the team does well. That conference is theirs for the taking.
Very few people get to make their head coaching debut for the P5, and those that do don't get paid too terribly much more than what Mr. Herman is going to get. Here's a list of several rookie HC salaries from the P5: Jimbo Fisher (FSU, 2010) - 1.05MM + up to 800K w/ incentives Paul Rhoads (ISU, 2009) - 950K David Beaty (Kansas, 2014) - 800K + up to 700K w/ incentives Dana Holgorsen (WVU, 2011) - 1.4MM Kevin Wilson (Indiana, 2011) - 1.2MM Kyle Flood (Rutgers, 2012) - 750K Scott Schafer (Syracuse, 2013) - 1.4MM Dan Mullen (Miss State, 2009) - 1.2MM It's an appropriate starting point, and I'm sure we will be willing to pay him if he succeeds. Problem is, you have to be in a P5 conference to afford that kind of salary. **ahem**

No affiliation with the Cougars, personally, but I like to see them do well, and that is an absolute home run hire for them.
Our coaching budget went from 2.7MM to 3.7MM in one year. UH admin again putting their money where their mouth is.
The absolute right move. This is like the all-in play right here for a shot to get an invite. If it doesn't happen within the next few years, it will never happen.
