Houston Is the New Capital Of Southern Cool We’ve been hearing the buzz for a few years now: Houston may, sneakily, be America’s best food city. But when we sent GQ food critic Brett Martin to dive into the scene, we realized that was selling the city way short. Link: https://www.gq.com/story/houston-restaurants-capital-of-southern-cool
Houston is a drastically underrated city. The city is overall very well ran and prosperous. The only real area where it comes up short is that it preserves so little of its architecture and history and that adds to a city being special. If you look at Chicago or NY, Houston is better in some areas but woefully behind on protecting its history and culture.
What a great piece, thanks for sharing. You can tell he really dug in and learned so much about the city. Houston really is underrated, but people are taking notice. I wish Houston was a little more pleasing to the eye, but it is what it is. So many hidden gems.
I was so impressed with the changes in and around Houston when I moved back here three years ago. Can't wait to continue discovering all that our great city has to offer.
Haha, I was skimming down the article, thinking to myself, "I don't give a **** about whether Houston is cool," and I see this quote: "Houston is cool because Houston doesn't give a **** about being cool." I guess they do know us.
Houston is most definitely underrated by people that haven't been here, but also count me in the group that doesn't care.
There's not really alot of competition for that -- Austin, Asheville, Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans, Charlotte, Memphis, Nashville and Miami. Alot of those cities have some major drawbacks. But, it is a matter of personal taste.
Anyone who "doesn't care" also doesn't care about getting free agents, Superbowls, festivals, etc. That's your right, but that's what you're claiming.
Austin is hipper because it has Dan's Hamburgers and P. Terry's. I added local Mighty Fine in the "premium burger and fries" category! Why? Because they make mighty fine burgers, that's why, and I dig their fries. Kudos to you for suggesting it in your reply to the OP.
Dallas is Big D which stands for Big Douche. Current Austin is a self righteous, non-diverse, yuppie-hipster-millennial mecca and it's getting worse. Houston is what Austin used to be but with great culture and great diversity. Houston is amazing but I'd rather people not know about it to be honest.
