I don't think the article or anyone ever tried to argue for using real guns versus tranquilizer. The gorrila was running wild in an area with heavy foliage. It was out of sight for a time. The people with tranquilizer guns had no good shot at the gorrila. The cops did because it was charging them. It was a case of using whatever mean available at the time.
