    Pretty cool.

Americans and Briton Receive Top French Honor for Stopping Train Gunman

PARIS — President François Hollande of France on Monday awarded the Legion of Honor, France’s highest award, to three Americans and a Briton for their role in stopping a gunman on a high-speed train traveling to Paris from Amsterdam on Friday.

The three Americans — Airman First Class Spencer Stone, 23; Alek Skarlatos, 22, a specialist in the Oregon National Guard; and their friend Anthony Sadler, 23 — received the honor in the gilded halls of the Élysée Palace, where they were joined by Chris Norman, 62, a British consultant.

If guns are so easily available to criminals in Europe, why is their murder rate a tiny fraction of ours????

Except then wouldn't you want to find out and shut down those smuggling networks? Seriously, you're very concerned about the ideology yet you seem unconcerned that ideological nut jobs are getting these type of weapons.

Honestly do you not see the flaw in your argument?

So then shouldn't be looking into how they get those weapons and stopping them from getting them?

Are you just arguing for the sake of arguing or do you really believe that Western Europe shouldn't bother to try to figure out how these weapons are being smuggled in and stop that?

True very determined people with good financing can get all sorts of things. But if we take that attitude why then bother with trying to catch terrorists since very determined terrorists will likely find ways to get weapons. For that matter Israel should stop trying to stop weapons from getting to Hamas and the world should stop trying to figure out how to stop ISIS from getting weapons and Iran from a nuke.

These are the type of absolutist arguments of the perfect against the good. Just because we can't stop something in every single case no matter how extreme the situation then we shouldn't do anything.

To follow up on Sweet Lou's post though if criminals had so much easy access to guns in Europe then why isn't gun crimes as high as it is in the US?

As for the rest of the post see my reply to Nook above. Your guys argument amounts to basically doing nothing to prevent terrorists from getting arms since some determined terrorists will still get them.

I've shot plenty of full autos but dealer sample and pre 1986 ak-47s are ultra rare in the USA. In Europe they are everywhere. It isn't a coincidence both French attacks used AK's. ATW made it obvious he doesn't think it is feasible to stop the flow of AK's when there are 100 million of them just a few border crossings away. You want to shut down all the borders? When the supply is so large and plentiful it isn't just one stream to close.

So in other words do nothing to prevent these type of people from getting their hands on these type of weapons.

What is your suggestion? You want to shut down all the borders? Metal detectors on trains? TSA style search at every station? When the supply is so large and plentiful it isn't just one stream to close. When the "network" is sourced to a guy who bought a few rifles for 20 bucks each what did you do?

I think when it comes to terrorist attacks and mass shootings gun control just isn't even close to an answer. It won't work.

Find out how this guy got his guns follow the supply train arrest those people so they can't supply others with his same leaning. Put more intelligence resources into finding smugglers and smuggling routes. I'm a proponent of greater trade but yes I would say we, both US and Europe, should be controlling the borders to address things like weapons smuggling. I would also make trade and other foreign policy with countries that have very open arms sales and production of things like Kalishnikovs contingent on controlling the flow of those weapons.

Taking on though your reasoning that because the supply is large and plentiful what other issues do you take that reasoning. Child prostitution is widespread and plentiful so should then Europe and other regions just not bother trying to stop it because determined perverts will find ways to have sex with children?

It won't work in your mind because you ideologically are incable of thinking in any way but absolutes when it comes to this issue.

Your debating has dropped off a cliff. False equivalency, skirting issues.

They already made them. You plan to punish poor nations for cold war era production that was directed by the soviets? France and Germany will sanction poor eastern nations? lol

    I'll take this one Bandwaginer.

They're afraid to kill anyone because every Euro has an AK47 under his trench coat. Duh.

Smuggle machine gun to murder, rob, steal makes little sense when you can do those things without it. Smuggle machine gun for a suicide run with a machine gun? You kinda need the machine gun to do that.

His suggestion is to trace how the methods the guns came into the country and the hands of the terrorist. He stated that multiple times.

He never said anything about shutting down borders or putting metal detectors on trains. Or that gun control is going to stop terrorist attacks from happening - no one has made that claim. That's called a strawman.

Gun control does yield a lower murder rate. So more people get to live and enjoy life in Europe because of gun control. Trying to using a terrorist act to say - hey - look, someone can get a gun into the country, might as well end gun control is akin to saying that any law that can be broken should be dropped.

Well look here - he raped that girl, but that just means it's a stupid law. Why make rape illegal when you can't stop rape? Or murder or bank robbery. My goodness, laws just don't make any sense at all!

Your logic doesn't make any sense. Gun control saves lives. Understanding how terrorists are moving guns into the country can make it more difficult to execute a terrorist act. Will it stop them entirely? Of course not. But the more you can do to limit them, the better.

Legalizing assault rifles in Europe will increase terrorist attacks there, not decrease it.

And the day will come when everyone can get scanned without all the hassle of today. You'll simply walk through the entrance and get scanned without missing a beat.

rocketsjudoka showed he is completely delusional in this thread. And that he likes to distract from the actual issue by starting a fake discussion about something he doesn't understand.

This topic could go on and on.

My issue is that many are so quick to judge Muslims as terrorists just based on their faith. Whether or not that sentiment is explicitly expressed, many people on this board imply it constantly.

Just because a large group of people practice a religion that is different than yours does not make them terrorists, or linked to terrorism whatsoever. Islam is really a religion of peace and some of its meaning is not to be taken literally. The same goes for Christianity. It has evolved over time to align with the progression of thought and society.

Yes, this man was a terrorist, but I despise the people that immediately group Muslims into the same category. It's sickening and intolerant.

Ever since 9/11 and the idiotic war that GWB led, Muslims have been outcasts because of their faith, even when they are far from any notion of terrorism related activities.

I'm glad this man was restrained, but he is not representative of the teachings associated with Islam. Fox News and the extreme right would like you to believe that Muslims, Islam and the Quran function as the framework for international terrorism. That's inaccurate.

Again, there are rotten apples in any group, including Christians and Catholics, but unlike Muslims, they are not faced with the same stereotypes and negative perceptions as those with ties to Islam.

Call me "delusional" all you want (as is the common word for those of you who result to name-calling), but I firmly believe in tolerance and rational thinking.

This is much larger than this topic. There's no time frame for the end, but the persecution of Muslims/Islam won't come to an end until we learn tolerance for cultures and religions that are different than our own.

There are "Islamic terrorists" and "Christian Terrorists," but they are few and far between. You could argue that the terrorists in America, lately, are the men and women wearing blue. Singling out African American men and minorities with lethal force could be considered terrorism, too. However, we turn a blind eye and focus on all of the so-called wickedness of Islam.

I'm hopeful that people will recognize the small population of religious extremists and dismiss their unwarranted beliefs that the "terrorist" label fits an entire group of people.

    Knowledge is power, kids.:)

Maybe you should educate yourself before rambling on.
