Fernando Tatis, there's a name I haven't heard in a while. What the hell happened to him, I remember for a season or two he was a stud, and Astro killer, for the Cards.
He had a monster year a few years back before Pujols Came along and played a bit of 3rd and made him expendable.
Varitek. Catalanotto - as an almost Spiers-like supersub, not a starter. Cormier. Williamson. Offer Smoltz a chance to start.
I don't think Smoltz can start anymore. He has thrown out his arm as a Closer cause he throws so hard now just for an inning or two. I don't think he can be a starter anymore.
1.) Where is the money going to come from 2.) If you somehow find the money do you really want to invest it in a 38 year old closer who wants to start again?
I'll take Garrett Anderson in CF or my third option would be Finley. How about a return of Carl Everett? I would also love to see Varitek with Guardado as my setup man. There are about 6 relievers that make my mouth drool like a Pavlovian dog.
I don't know if at his age if he can stretch out his arm and stay helathy. Could you imagine him as a setup man?
Hmm... JD Drew would be a nice consolation prize if we weren't able to lock down Beltran. He's also represented by Boras... maybe he'll advertise him to the 'Stros, if he steers Beltran away from us. He'll be a little cheaper, and has the potential to be a very very good player... of course, the knock on him is all the injuries he's suffered, but he finally put together an entire year on the field. He's a good enough defensive player to play CF at MMP... great arm, good speed. He's no Beltran, but he's much much better than Lance or Lane. Bottom line... if we're willing to spend $15 mil. a year on Beltran, we should at least take a flyer on $8-10 mil. a year for Drew. (which will probably not be enough... but its worth a shot). Also, Drew would set all sorts of HR records at MMP... he owned this place when he was a Cardinal.
Boy, personally, I'd love to have John Smoltz as a setup man, but I don't think there's any way he'd go for it. Of course, I also don't think there's any way the Astros will even entertain the idea of talking to him. But if I were them, I would.
Glanville??? I missed that one. Glanville sucks. I'd rather have Ausmus at the plate. The only way I'd like to see him as an Astro was if they signed a corner OF, shifted Lance to center and then Doug came into the game as a defensive replacement. But that's assuming if the team doesn't get a very good CF and if Tavares isn't ready for the big club. So with all those contigengencies, I can feel a sense of relief knowing that Glanville only has a 1% chance of playing for Houston and a 3% chance of playing for the Express.
Negative, he actually fell victim to the young Rangers curse. He, like Ruben Mateo, fell victim to an injury that basically crippled the rest of his career. Both were going to be stellar players. Also, Pujols didnt play for the Cards until 2001... Tatis was already in Montreal by then.
I think the two priorities should be catcher, and speed. Brad Ausmus is a great team player, but you look at all the stats and realize he just isn't making it as an everyday big league catcher anymore. And Chavez is worse. Varitek would be great, but not likely.
