New "Taller Than Yao Ming" film looking for stars

SINGAPORE: MediaCorp Raintree Pictures is holding an island-wide audition for young actors to star in its new movie "Taller Than Yao Ming".

Written and directed by Han Yew Kwang, one of Singapore's up-and-coming directors, "Taller Than Yao Ming" is a story of two 11-year-old boys who chase a giant dream by travelling on their own to attend the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Their goal is to play basketball, one-on-one, with NBA Superstar Yao Ming.

But even before the cameras start rolling, the film already has support from big stars - Zeng Fanzhi, one of China's top contemporary artists whose works have sold for close to a million dollars, is lending a hand.

MediaCorp Raintree Pictures will send photographs of the selected boy actors to Zeng, who has agreed to do a painting to help raise awareness of the movie, and also for a good cause.

Said Daniel Yun, MD, MediaCorp Raintree Pictures, "I asked him if he would paint a painting in association with "Taller Than Yao Ming" because it's our first collaboration with China. And he gladly agreed because he felt that the story was unique.

"It's also inspirational, like Singapore is a small country but with a huge dream that's taller than Yao Ming.

"We don't know how the whole painting will look like but he's very renowned, and probably, we think that the net worth of the painting will be beyond our reach.

"It doesn't belong to us and it will be used in an auction to raise money for physical education in China, or maybe more global. We don't know yet. But it will be auctioned for charity, a charity objective which is related to the theme of the movie."

Casting for the parts played by the two boys begins in mid-May.

Those who are interested in auditioning can find further details at www.mediacorpraintree.com. - CNA/yy

I hope Lionsgate will invest in this film. The plot is creative and How can one go wrong with a title like that :D

A lot can go wrong considering that Mediacorp produces some really cheesy and sappy shows. Singapore's domestic film and video industry is very uneven. There have been a couple of good local directors but Mediacorp is the official network and the government has a stake in its ownership and management. Most of the stuff I've seen produced by it tends to play it extremely safe which means tacky and syrupy comedies and dramas.
