    old families, namely those in western europe, have spread their wealth out so quietly over generations that it is impossible for an outside entity like forbes to quantify their total worth. but undoubtedly, there are families whose holdings would utterly dwarf the rooks/MIP's sitting smug at the top of this list

    That may be true, but unless all the members of the family act together, which seems unlikely to me, they can't wield as much power collectively as these individuals with the high net worth.
