You have no understanding of the business if football if you don't think coaches look at GMs when they take a job. The good ones pick and choose, because the good ones want to win a ring and if the structure is the traditional one with GM picking the players you'd better choose a guy who knows what the hell he's doing because it directly impacts your success and thereby your tenure.

True dat. People who think they "just ran Clemson plays" know d!ck about football. But Watson did get better faster than many expected. It was pretty rough early on -- had trouble taking snaps from under center/getting the ball out :D:

How can you fire a coach that's going to lead us to a Super Bowl?

There is a lot of talent and excitement at he QB position. It is there. But has it translated to wins? With all that offense, Watson was 3-4 with wins over Bengals, Titans, and Browns. The Titans game was with an injured Mariota for a half. I would say the coach got the more out of his QB if he had won a game that Matt Schaub couldn't have won for us.

The truth is O'Brien's system is terrible and he's a poor judge of talent.

The only time his offense worked was when he ran the Clemson offense.

I forgot how all those QBs BOB had to "prove his offensive prowess" were off killing it with other coaches. I mean what do you want him to do with who he had? Goodness hes not a miracle worker...

I get this is sarcasm, but why is every failure on the coach and every success on the player then? I mean a player definitely helps but BOB definitely schemed for Watson and Savage couldnt do any of that.

So--- if "offensive mastermind QB guru" BOB isn't supposed to create a minimally viable offense... that begs the question.

the problem is that we have had so many players
How many quarterbacks have we had during his tenure?
They were all bad . . . .. including Watson . . . but he was able to Coach up Watson . .the rest were just bums?

    Seals it.

Pretty sure every other HC hired at same time has been extended, don't think any had better records at the time of their extensions. No reason to think Uncle Rick wants O'Brien.

More like younger and fat and the GM is godfather to your kid.

    Yes, they do.

La Canfora is a hack so TIFWIW

Texans could be heading toward a split with Bill O'Brien despite recent success

With Texans coach Bill O'Brien about to enter the final season of his contract, and the Texans struggling down the stretch, numerous sources close to he and general manager Rick Smith believe a split is imminent. The relationship between the men has long been complicated, and many close to the situation believe change is on the horizon.

O'Brien has won two division titles and would normally be in line for a lucrative contract extension, but it's far from certain the Texans would extend the kind of lucrative offer he could draw on the open market. O'Brien, who told reporters last week that he hopes to stay in Houston, is aware that he would be coveted elsewhere at a time when nearly a third of the league could be hiring a new coach and there are few proven head coaching candidates. His options would be robust on a long-term deal.

While it would be difficult on some level to leave after having success in Houston, and the development of rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson prior to his injury is a significant allure, there also stand to be opportunities with other teams with established quarterbacks on this market. After years of friction between coaching and management in Houston, some close to the situation anticipate a parting of the ways between the coach and organization.

The Texans, meantime, would boast one of the most attractive coaching jobs in the NFL, with stars on both sides of the ball and Watson playing at an All-Pro level prior to his injury. Even the biggest of big fishes like Jon Gruden, Jim Harbaugh or David Shaw might be inclined to at least consider a job that attractive. O'Brien coaching out his lame-duck year appears untenable, and the recent negative attention on the franchise for the handling of Tom Savage's concussion last week has only heightened the talk around the league of change in Houston.

In such a competitive coaching market, it would obviously behoove the Texans to sort out this situation as quickly as possible after the season, while defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel, who is thought highly of by other teams, would be one obvious internal candidate should O'Brien and the Texans indeed part ways.

Saw an article from a Bears site asking if the bears fire John Fox if they should wait around for O'Brien to possibly become available and potentially lose out on other coaches if he doesn't become available.

It's a stupid move to get rid of the guy. Other teams will be lining up for him.

They already have been and he'll have his choice of jobs, at least two that would be considered "surprise" openings.

No doubt O'Brien will hired immediately if he is gone.

As I recall it was La Canfora who was one of the main ones who told you Brockweiler was a backup and a b!tch diva that Rick and CalBob pushed onto O'Brien...

When the local sports "media" were telling you how "good" he looked in camp.
