    Here is a better point: If you can't find a couple of PFs better than Hayes, your TEAM is flawed whatever the system is. Next season, we better hope Chuck is either the backup PF or a scrub or we are in for more disappointment. After obtaining a new starting PG, a new starting PF is priority #2 because Chuck isn't good enough.

    Using part of the MLE on Chuck would probably doom us from signing anybody worthwhile with the MLE this summer. Let's face it, with JVG gone and Adelman in town, Chuck has moved further down the totem pole.

    The Hayes man-love is laughable.

    Top WC PF's ppg vs 2006-07 Rockets:

    Duncan => season= 20.0 // vs Houston = 24.0
    Marion => season= 17.5 // vs Houston = 17.0
    Nowitski => season= 24.6 // vs Houston = 23.8
    Boozer => season= 20.9 // vs Houston = 15.3
    Boozer => playoffs vs SAS = 24.5 // GS = 24.2 // Houston 24.6
    Garnett => season= 22.4 // vs Houston = 23.3
    Brand => season= 20.5 // vs Houston 24.0
    Al Harrington => WC season= 17.0 // vs Houston 19.0
    Nene => season= 12.2 // vs Houston = 11.7

    Exceptions
    * Boozer scored more in the playoffs vs HOU
    * Marion was .5 lower

    With the above noted exceptions, I don't find anything conclusive to support Hollinger's PER and plus/minus BS. If the above stats support Hayes as a great defender then the Rockets were terrible at team defense or these players got all their points off Yao and JHo which means Van Gundy was a terrible defensive coach for not leaving Hayes on them fulltime.

    I rest my case. At best "the 2nd best PF defender in the NBA" will be on the bench next season.

    I understand Chuck's liabilities better than anyone, but if you are going to use stats at least use them effectively. Hayes didn't even guard Boozer in the playoffs...so how can that be his fault?

    Also, part of the problem with Chuck's man scoring is rotation. The defense in which JVG ran was help and recover. The Hollinger rankings were based on the following...

    Do I think Chuck is a starter? No I never did, I always figured he would be a sixth man/backup... but does that mean he was completely ineffective at the spot this past year? Not at all.

    Do I think there is a spot for him on the Rockets next year? It's debatable. But I think he has shown that he can help a team out as a specialist if nothing else.

    Hayes was out for over a quarter of the season and he only plays around 28mpg leaving Howard out there to get lit up. Find me stats against Hayes and not the Rockets as a whole.

    I don't need a minute by minute summary to tell me that any statistician placing Hayes above Kevin Garnett as a defender is reading too many mathematical equations and not paying enough attention to what's happening on a basketball court.

    BTW, he played in 78 games...how is that "out for 1/4 of a seasob"? More fuzzy math for us to swallow?

    I like Chuck Hayes, but all we have to spend to improve this team is the MLE. If we have to use part of it to sign him, then we can't get anybody else really to improve. If we don't improve, then we take another step back.

    I'd like Hayes back, but improving the team is priority one. He's just not a good enough player to let him be the best part of your offseason.

    I will say this about Chuck Hayes, he is better than Stromile Swift.

    I want Hayes to stay on the team, but I don't think he should get anything close to starter minutes. He can be like Eduardo Najera was, a few years ago. Just bring energy off the bench.

    Yeah, no kidding. I'd say he did a pretty good job on Okur. Yao got owned on that deal.

    Which shouldn't be very hard. It's a forgone conclusion if the Rockets are serious about getting better.

    To say that Chuck is better than Stromile Swift is condemning him with faint praise.

    well chuck is better than swift, false praise or not its true.

    and werent the rockets "serious about getting better" last offseason when they went into the season with chuck as a legit possibility to start?

    You are completely right. I had a mental lapse. It was Yao that was out and Hayes that moved to the bench.
