This could easily go in the NBA forum, but I wanted the discussion to be Rockets related.

Maybe the Rockets should be doing more of this.

lol, right? This is a simple trap-based defense.

Rockets lead the league in steals. Or they did for most of the season.

Maybe thats why the defense is so bad. Trying to get steals instead of playing sound defense.

isnt this just a basic 2-1-2 with elements of 1-4?

I am always confused when people act like this is a new concept. This is exactly how we played man defense in high school back in 2002-2006 when I played.

The only reason man to man defense wasn't played like this previously in the NBA is because the old illegal defense rules prevented it.

And for the record, in the video, defenders on the help side are out of position. They shouldn't be sticking to their man when the ball is on the other side of the court.

Been trying to explain this in the Dish wrt what the eradication of illegal defense has done. None of what Thorpe showed was allowed by illegal defense rules. And it isn't a college zone, as players still have man responsibilities, when players move from "ball side" to "help side" as shown in the simplified video.

Not a "simple trap-based" defense, because that is double-teaming primarily.

Thorpe said it pretty well...defenses are putting more defenders on the ball side than there are offensive players. I know that sounds like a zone, but it zone principles used by a man defense. It's not as easy to do as he portrays against NBA offenses.

Watch the defenses against WB and Harden. They are easiest to spot. There is a man behind the primary defender or in the lane...or at worst hedging over enough to force them to a side they don't want to go. These were illegal prior and are not zones.

It's not a new concept, just that some teams are better at performing it than others.

A lot of Rockets offense falls into this trap and has to improvise their way out of it... one of the most frustrating thing to watch for me. (eye test)

In the 'video"? It was placards on a board. haha. Not that precise

Maybe you were playing a more tradition NBA-style man, that was even used in illegal zone times. Not so sure HS requires the sophistication of a Thibs defense, given the lack of shooters and ISO players they are typically facing.

When you say "this," can you describe your defense of a PnR or an ISO?

    It isn't new - correct.

Yet it's still funny they chose a coach who isn't even in the league as an example of what good NBA defenses look like "these days".

In terms of PnR defense and ISO, explain what "it" is, please, before saying "it's not new"

Explain the concept, in terms of PnR defense and ISO.

Hell, I used to get in debates on this board that NBA defenses try to force the ball to the baseline, and people would pull out the ole mantra of HS coaches, "funnel your man to the middle" to say they don't do that.

They're doing the saloon door technique with the classic reach around.

I remember hedging and showing on PnR. I don't know what you mean by how can I describe the defense of an ISO.

If the ball was thrown into the post we'd often ambush and rotate.

Other than that, isolation was defended using the same rules as any other kind of play.

We're still trying to just "play with energy" and "get on the same page"
