Houston Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell says he still has no definitive timetable for his return from shoulder surgery June 7.

"I don't know," said Bagwell, who has been in the Astros' clubhouse for all home games since having surgery. "When you see me start walking around with a bat, maybe we'll know something then.

"I'd say it's 50-50," Bagwell told the Houston Chronicle.

Bagwell originally said he would try to return this season, although that might be unlikely.

"Now I know I'm still a long way away," Bagwell told the paper. "I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. I understand that I might not be able to play again."

Is it worth asking about returning this season?

"Outside chance," he told the Chronicle. "Maybe as a pinch hitter."

Bagwell also knows that there's a chance he might not return to baseball at all.

"I think it'll be a little easier because I'm going to stay in the game," he told the paper. "I don't know what I'll do, but it'll be something. Being hurt the way I've been for the last four years, knowing my time was coming anyway, that has forced me to think about it.

"It's not like I'm at the beginning of my career anyway."
