Curious how bad everyone hates the Rockets off-season? Candidly I actually like the off-season, it’s not perfect but IMO…. 1. The team is vastly better today than when the off-season started 2. The long term core of this team is very exciting to me - Coach - Ime Udoka - PG - Amen Thompson - SG - Jaylen Green - KPJ - SF - Cam Whitmore - Tari Eason - PF - Jabari Smith - C - Alperen Sengun 3. Of the Free Agents signed this weekend I doubt FVV is here more than 2 years unless Amen doesn’t pan out or if for some reason he would be happy coming off of the bench. If Dillon Brooks defense is as good as advertised I could see him sticking around as a defensive specialist if he can get his 3-pt shot back to where it was the first few years in the league. 4. The teams 3-pt shooting is an issue but my hope is this: - Jabari Smith was drafted because his defense and 3-pt shot was supposed to be elite. I expect his shot to come around - KPJ already has a good 3-pt shot - Cam Whitmore shot 34% from the arc as a college freshman and his stroke looks good - Jalen Green & Alperen Sengun need to spend some time in the gym but I’m they’re both young so I’m holding out hope for them to turn into good 3-pt shooters - Ben Sullivan 5. Of all the players exiting Houston, only KJ Martin has a real shot IMO do ever be a significant part of a rotation on a decent team. OK, that’s all I got. Do you really hate the off-season of just disappointed that we didn’t get more?
I give the offseason a C so far and the only reason it's not an F is getting the best non-diva Kyrie free agent PG which was our biggest position of need on a short term deal. Major downgrade from KMJ to Brooks at the wing and dumping solid third string PG/C candidates TyTy and Garuba for nothing (and paying to do so) were horrendous moves. What I hate is that we easily could have accomplished the first thing without doing the second thing.
While I am not super excited with what we have done so far I am willing to give it time to see how it works out. I will give Udoka a chance to make something out if this group of guys before I pass judgment. This offseason cannot be truly evaluated until we see what they can do next season.
Personally I hate it. Will watch Rockets because I pushed for the drafting of Jalen Green, Jabari. Tari and Cam Whitmore.... but I'm done with Stone. Spacing, spacing, spacing.....without it you got nothing. Yes, defense wins championships; but keeping the opponents to 104 points while we average 85 points will not be winning basketball. Not this year. I'm advocating for KPj to accept a trade to Clippers or Orlando where he will fit in better. Avoid, "current NBA player under contract stabs teammate (FVV)" headlines.
When people look back on this offseason, they will remember the draft, not minor free agency stuff. It will all depend on what Amen and Cam turn into.
We are a 40-45 win team depending on if Jalen & Sengun get their **** together We will be in the post season
The last three years was like a hoarder living in a condemned house. New coach starting to clean up the trash but the walls have that caked in urine/mold stench
Great post, we are a better team than last week….no doubt. Losing Brook Lopez hurts but that situation was out of our hands. Do we need shooters? Yeah, but we have decent shooters and now we have a shooting coach. Landale is just not a interior defender. Jeff Green is truly a asset to our team. We need to make one more move before the Summer League starts….one more. It’s feel incomplete
Are we really better than we were last week? We just picked up a starter who is objectively worse than any starter on the team last year and we're stuck with him for 4 years. That guy will demand that he dominate the ball on offense and he's a bigger black hole than Westbrick ever was. That alone might mean we're worse now than we were last week.
That statement has nothing to do with LeBron and what went on in the playoffs (although that doesn't hurt his cause). Just look at their numbers (posted from another thread). Win Shares: Brooks: 1.6 KMJ: 4.9 Box Plus Minus: Brooks: -3.9 KMJ: -.7 Value Over Replacement Player: Brooks: -1.1 KMJ: 0.7
Nothing wrong with bringing KMJ off the bench. Tari was almost as good as Brooks last year and may be better this year.
That's because some people bought into the lies by Udoka that minutes and roles would have something to do with merit. Sure it was always an obvious lie, but if you bought into that, sure Brooks would almost never play, he's terrible.
In general, horrible mismanagement of funds. Four years for how much! Just absurd and unnecessary. For someone his own team didn't want to resign. It Is like nobody wanted him. When did the Rockets virtually max him out?
