I guess it is mainly for a collecting thing,...though I intend to shoot it at the range and I might go hunting with it. Very high quality rifle and accurate. I am not even sure I will purchase it, since my AR-15 fills my desire of having a combat style weapon which is versatile and can be used for plinking (target shooting), hunting and self-defense, if ever called upon. The M1A uses the popular .308 winchester round which is used extensively in military applications (called 7.62 X 51mm in military- same thing.) as well as civilian's hunting medium size game (such as white-tail deer and black bear.) I already have a rifle in .30-06 which is my preferred hunting caliber and actually has slightly more punch than the .308. I am leaning towards not really buying one...What is interesting is the hunting applications for the renowned AR-15 is actually quite limited...The .223 (also known as 5.56 X 45) is known as a very high velocity, and very lethal round to man....but not recommended on deer! Mainly for varmints such as ....never mind.

I'd feel safer if someone was shooting at me fully automatic. In 3 seconds, their clip would be emptied and then you can jump them.

of course, I always say the opposite.

You are absolutely right, Space Ghost. It is proven, and actually better to use semi-auto. rather than full automatic...unless you have 100 people coming at you at once.

There's a Mexican restaurant nearby where I work that some of my co-workers and I frequent. There's a gun range within a few miles of that restaurant, so we can see it as we head to and leave from eating at the restaurant. It's amazing how much more packed that place is since the 9/11. Kinda scary.
