I’ve done another in-depth look at a new signing for my blog, this time on DJ. It doesn’t sound like Houston has really placed much stock in him as a prospect but he’s going to get minutes and I hope he can impress. Check out the blogpost here, I went through all of his possessions in Milwaukee this year to breakdown his game. https://www.teaandrockets.com/post/d-j-wilson-deep-dive-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-newest-houston-rocket
Great breakdown bro. Such analysis needs to be highlighted and features. iYO do you think utilizing Wilson as a 4 , backup or starter, would mitigate some of his weaknesses? On defense it appears he’s smart and quick enough from your analysis to be able to pull it off. He would not be banging with the bigger bodies at that position and it seems he’d be able to guard stretch 4s effectively. On rebounding he could box out smaller guys and allow Wood or KJ to really go after and confirm the rebound with the aggression. On offense he likely wouldn’t be our roll man with better options ahead of him but he could essentially play the Tucker role in those sets and camp the corner. Or relegate to the dunkers spot to run high low with the big setting the screen.
Big fan of Wilson when he was with MIL. Seems to have the tools... he rebounded well against DET, but they didn't look like they cared at that point Since then.....
Can Wilson play the 4? Because Ray Spalding is same height but longer (7'5 vs. 7'3 wingspan) but a much more aggressive roller/lob threat. And Spalding is a better iso defender, switches 1-5 and is more disruptive in passing lanes and protecting rim. Spalding rebounds better too. Wilson is the more natural 3ball shooter of the 2 but Spalding shoots without hesitation and has much better ability to put ball on floor and get to rim and is not the disaster as a passer as Wilson is.
DJ could be someone you stick in the rotation now. They need to start giving him some minutes. Get this guard rotation out the door. They need rebounding. Id even go with this lineup next. Porter - Tate - KJ - DJ - Wood Wall off the bench. Why even try to bring in the wow factor anymore.
His defense makes me think, yes. His offense makes me think, ruh-roh shaggy. Nice breakdown for sure. To others: it's definitely worth taking your time to go through each section. DJ Wilson has some issues and solutions for us. It seems it'll be about fit or adaptation for him.
I liked DJ Wilson in college but has been a big disappointment in my opinion at the NBA level. I had him as a promising stretch-4 to small ball center. Has been a bit of a spaz with Milwaukee. Hopefully a change of scenery can tap into that potential. Pro game has exposed some of his defensive flaws or lapses.
Great evaluation. Appreciate the effort. Once roster is settled, Wilson should be a rotational fixture.
I like him. Give him some minutes and see what you get. I don’t think he’s a star, but I do think he can be a rotational player in the NBA.
Wilson was quick to mesh with KPJ in the pick and pop/roll game. I like his 3 ball ability and size from watching him live in game, but prior to the write up didnt really even bother to give him the benefit of the doubt after assuming it was a throw in player. I've been pleasantly surprised so far.
He was a putrid rebounder yesterday. I don't see it - I've followed him for a bit. 1 rebound in 10 minutes and out-muscled inside by a backup - just awful.
For this reason, I think he needs to be used more as a PF. I don't see him ever-growing the pair of nuts required to play in the paint.
Rebounding has been one of his criticisms. But I like him so much better than Patton. And he helped rid us of Kurucs.
One thing I noticed is how QUICK he is for a big, if someone would work with him he would have a major quickness advantage - he is guard like in his side to side movement - very very quick, one of the quickest bigs I have seen since Dream. DD
