Since the Rockets are in the LT, every dollar they spend with this exception costs them 2, so a 6 million dollar player costs them 12.
Here's a question. If Yao misses the entire season will his salary be retroactively taken off the cap?
It's still a $6M asset that you're "spending" on a $3M player. I'm not one to be naive when it comes to somebody else's money, but LA obviously has the flexibility to spend extra cash to keep this team competitive as evidenced by the $6M or so he dropped on draft night alone. Spending $1-for-$1 past the LT to perhaps add a Millsap type player and hope to remain in the mix of things all of a sudden seems like a decent risk to take. Plus, there's wild cards like Cook/Barry that have expiring deals that you can always pull a Francis-to-Memphis type deal to try to get under. If he's cool with doing that, great. If not, no hard feelings either. He's been a great owner that's made a lot of risky/flashy deals in the past that plenty of other GM's wouldn't have.
Thank you great post! If the Rockets obtain this exception I hope they don't run out and waste it on a player of lesser value. Can we or should we even try to steal Gortat back from dallas?
That'd be more complimentary to Von Wafer if it takes drafting 3 players to replace his spot. Considering 1 of those players was a point guard overseas stash pick, another has a comparison to a "taller Brent Barry" (with Brent Barry being on the team, in case he's dealt?), and James White is an unguaranteed contract, its not like you can totally count him out the picture if the funds become available. So deep breaths, and see what everyone else is looking at here
No. If Yao was deemed medically unfit to play and retired sometime before the end of the regular season this year, as well as picked up his player option for 2011, the Rockets could apply for a waiver one year after a league appointed doctor says he'll never play again. They could then wipe the 2011 salary off their salary cap. There's nothing they can do about this year, however. Think about Darius Miles's situation; Portland tried to wipe off his future salary from the cap, but since he actually suited up and played 10 games again, they got his contract figure reapplied to their cap. There's probably some confusion between what insurance pays, and what counts against the cap. Most standard NBA contracts have built in insurance clauses whereby if a player suffers a season ending injury, or one that causes them to miss a large amount of time, an outside insurer will pay 80% of the player contract, with the team being responsible for the remainder. This is completely independent of anything involving the NBA and the salary cap. Even though insurance will pay 80% of the $39.6M T-Mac and Yao are owed in 2010, the only thing that means is Les Alexander is not going to pay too much for a lottery team. It also might explain the aggression that the Rockets are showing in free agency; at this time, they basically have a team salary of $33.7M+5.8M for Ariza and two more minimum contracts for Taylor and Budinger; right now, Donald Sterling, Michael Heisley and Bob Johnson are turning green with envy. So even if the Rockets pay the full luxury tax with a disabled player exception, they'll only be paying around $50M for salaries; meaning the team should be fairly profitable even if ticket sales dry up like mad.
Why would we get Von Wafer? We need this potential money to replace Yao, which means we need a center.
THANKS for your input, it's GREAT! The above has also been my question - it seems incongruously unfair to a team for being 'double hit', a really grim double down. But, hey, thanks for the knowledge.
I have 2 questions: If Yao qualifies for the exception, does his number come off next year's cap? Will the exception count on the cap?
Any opinions on Marcus Camby? He is owed $7.6 mil next year, and would be the perfect filler in Yao's absence. He gets the minutes he wants, plays great D, can run a little and is playing for a contract the year after. Also, his cost will come off next year and not count towards the cap. Correct me if i'm wrong. Now, I know the almost $6 mil is not $7.6 mil, and we can't combine our other TE. But is it possble to add some cash?
At his point acquiring a expensive big man(>5.8 mil FLM exception) doesn't make sense, unless that player is young and has good potential.
put scola at center and landry at the 4 with dorsey and cook backing them up. i still think we have a better than average team with what we have...more run and gun style...maybe itll be exciting..who knows
