Is the NY-14 victory the start of a trend? How far will this go and is this the start of Bernie 2020? Pelosi did not seem too happy about it. One more question, I could be wrong but I seem to remember the DNC passing some type of rule regarding their support in these cases (I cannot remember the details) but what does this mean for the Ocasio-Cortez?
For every Republican who won a recent primary and who supports SS and Medicare should we ask the question ... was that a Republican Socialist Victory? Spoiler Of course the answer is no in both cases. This whole line of thinking should be .a non-starter.
many many many people don't know this but democratic socialists are very religious,St. Jude St. Luke, The virgin mary much love for all of them. They're not godless like dem' libras!@!
Wow, sure seems this one congresswomen has captured the fancy of fox news and the trumpublican party...
Sorta just kidding... but to be honest I really don't think its a big deal. Sure, he was a big favorite, but I think it was a perfect storm of youthful dynamic candidate versus a candidate that didn't even show up to a debate, and I think she spoke to issues important locally to that district, which is a pretty blue district. But just as there wasn't a huge wave of "socialist" candidates after Ellison won, I don't think the country will be overrun by left wing candidates.
The Repubs are going to use Ocasio-Cortez to raise money and grow enthusiasm. "socialism" has become the new "liberalism" for conservative partisan dogma: Better vote and donate, just so the crazy hippy liberal socialists like Ocasio-Cortez don't run the House. Repubs probably market tested the phrase "socialist" to make sure it had high negatives with their voters. The correct play here for he Democrats is to embrace the label and market hard and late that the Repubs do not support socialistic programs like SS and Medicare ... they gonna kick Grandma off of SS and Medicare first chance they get.
I don't think a closeted Red Shirt like you should be freaking out at the word Socialist. Good job spewing nonsense and disinformation when it would have taken you two seconds to verify any of it. What cases, what rule?
Trying to take back a name that has been negatively viewed by so much of the population for so long is not a good idea. Calling yourself a socialist is too radioactive -- it's like trying to sell bundles of faggots on the side of the road.
Overreact much??? What makes you think I am freaking out about it? I simply asked a few questions out of curiosity. I definitely do not view this as any kind of threat. I was mainly curious if this will be the start of a trend where we see more and more elected like the Tea Party with the republicans. I wanted to see how people like you on the left feel about it. If I am wrong, which I admitted I was unsure, then correct me.
True. It is certainly a risk...but a risk that has to be taken because Obama was called a socialist too. They've thrown the word around so much I think it is losing its meaning. I also think that Ocasio's and Bernie's brand of socialism is very different than what people are imagining. It's something that exists pretty well in European countries. I doubt this is the end of it so you'll see more. I think the impact they will have is bringing the Democratic party farther left and if the DNC is wise they'll take the best ideas from the movement and disregard the worst ones...like universal jobs or whatever that is... I think plenty in the country want Free Healthcare, affordable education, and decriminalizing mar1juana (along with no more for-profit prisons) I think these are things the Democratic party should promote.
I'll go with what she said about it. Her label doesn't matter. When she was running the campaign, she didn't go out and talk to the people about being a Democratic Socialist. She went and talked to them about the issues. They liked her positions on the issues and she won. She didn't wake up in the morning thinking about being a Democratic Socialist. She woke up in the morning thinking about the issues and how to solve problems. Talking about labels is a waste of time. As long as the Democrats can focus on the issues and they push that, the labels will have little to no effect.
This is what I figure but wanted see some on the left opinions on it. The Tea Party pushed the Republicans farther right and figure this will push the Democrats farther left.
