I think you bolded the wrong part. That one juror used a racial epithet after the trial doesn't mean he didn't get a fair trial. That his lawyer was not engaged in his defense is probably more relevant.

Not really. A juror used a racial slur eight years after the trial. He most certainly should be exonerated. The use of a racial slur is much more relevant than good representation in court.

I can quibble about the slur, but I think you are basically right. Our criminal justice system has very little protection for the rights of people who don't have the means or know-hot to defend themselves. This guy went to trial for capital murder with an overworked/under-engaged public defender. It looks like important information -- like his mental disability -- were not presented because he had inadequate representation. The death penalty may still be appropriate for this guy, I don't know, but we do know that public defenders are underfunded and overburdened to such an extent that I would call it negligent and a violation of civil rights. But, I don't think the potentially-racist juror matters here. It's a systemic failure that creates a burden of injustice that falls primarily on the usual suspects -- the poor, blacks and other minorities, and the mentally impaired -- because the average Joe tax-payer doesn't want to fund an adequate legal defense for the indigent.

It is about a fundamentalist Muslim attempting to justify (homosexuals being pushed off buildings, women being raped and oppressed, common people being slaughtered in the street) atrocities in the name of extremist Islam by posting about a black man (that tried to kill two people, was successful in shooting an innocent woman five times in the head) sentenced to death for a crime that he plead guilty to (but years later a juror said he was racist, and after a series of lengthy appeals), was put to death 20 years after his crime.....

He makes the comparison, he fishes for any possible wrong doing elsewhere to justify the horrible barbaric, and evil practices by Muslim extremists in large areas of the Middle East.

That is all.

 

The crime here, and the reason the death penalty should be abolished is the fact that it took eight years to get this done.

They should have walked him out of the courtroom eight years ago and right onto the gallows. That would have been an effective crime prevention measure. Eight years on death row is cruel but unfortunately not unusual punishment.

There is a reason for this. It's called an appeals process.

It has saved the lives of quite a few death row inmates who were found innocent later.

It all comes down to this. What is morally worse? Accidentally executing an innocent man, or letting a murderer/rapist live?

 

Is it hypocritical for a person who supports a regime that doesn't even allow its people to openly practice whatever belief system they want INCLUDING the absence of believe to criticize the U.S. justice system?
