Couple found dead hours after their wedding in apparent murder/suicide

The 911 transcript makes me very uneasy

TERRE HAUTE, IN -- It was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives. Instead, police say a groom killed his new bride just hours after their wedding before taking his own life.

Dr. George Scott Samson married nurse Kelly Ecker Saturday afternoon in Terre Haute, Indiana, CNN reports. Wedding guests told police there was some tension between the couple after the ceremony.

"Some guests are telling us the bride and groom didn't speak to each other at the reception," said Vigo County Sheriff Chief Deputy Clark Cottom.

Hours later, the county's 911 operator received a frantic call from the couple's home. ABC affiliate WAWV-TV released transcripts of those 911 calls.

Dispatcher: "911 what's the address of your emergency?"
Kelly: "4205 North Creal. Please.
Dispatcher: What's the address?"
Kelly: "4205 North Creal."
Dispatcher: "Ok what's going on there?"
Kelly: "He's beating the (expletive) out of me."
Dispatcher: "Who is?"
Kelly: "My husband."
Dispatcher: Who's your husband?"
Kelly: "Scott Samson. He's got guns inside.
Dispatcher: "He's got what?"

The call then promptly ended. The 911 operator tried to reconnect but wasn't able to reach the home. Just two minutes later, a second and final call came into the dispatch center.

Kelly: "Help!"
Dispatcher: "What's the address of your emergency?"
Kelly: "4205 North Creal."
Dispatcher: "Ok 4205..."
Kelly: "Oh my God!"
*Multiple shots fired*

The call then came to an end.

Deputies had been dispatched to the home after the first call. They were only a couple of minutes away when the gunshots were heard during the final 911 call.

When they arrived, they were met by an elderly male relative of Samson's who directed them to Kelly's body. Police say she'd been shot multiple times.

Also in the room was Ecker's 10-year-old son. The child was unharmed as was a second elderly relative found in another part of the home.

The residents told deputies Samson had locked himself in the basement with several weapons and ammunition. Deputies surrounded the home immediately.

"The house is near a wooded area and a cornfield and we didn't want an armed man running deep into the woods," Cottom said.

Deputies sent a robot into the basement which found Samson's body near his gun safe. Deputies say it appeared he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputies still are not sure why the prominent anesthesiologist decided to kill his new bride and then himself. The couple did not have a history of domestic violence, but police said just because it wasn't reported, doesn't mean it wasn't happening.

Domestic violence is so bad. Grew up seeing it. Makes me so angry... stuff like this happens so often its crazy.

Very true, these intimate and horrible moments of someone crying for help should not be open to the public, out of respect for the victim and family.

Willing to bet the Groom was an alcoholic who went sober months before to prove to her his commitment, as requirement of hers to accept his proposal. So she married him. Then he fell off the wagon at the wedding; hence the tension at the end of the wedding.

btw: anyone else confused about how many people were in that house? I'm not following the explanation.

It's possible that he was broke and she was mad that they were going back to her parents' house, living with the parents and the son. Really sad way to spend your wedding night...

I'm confused as to why the 10 year old was in the room with her body.

So, at the end of the wedding he told her the honeymoon was off (he gambled it away...for instance) and they were going to sleep in his parents' basement bedroom?

Pre-nup caused argument?

...the newlyweds had been arguing about prior to the shootings, but the couple reportedly began bickering over their prenuptial agreement during their reception. The argument became increasingly heated as the celebration moved to the couple’s mansion in Terre Haute, People.com reports.

Ah. I didn't read the article like it wasn't a mansion. I read "basement" near woods" as a shack. So, she was a gold-digger. Why would he kill over that, though. Still makes little sense.

This is jumping to conclusions of course but it mentioned he was an anesthesiologist and from what I know working within the industry, those specialists are more prone to drug use than any other specialist since access to medication is easy. Maybe drug use plus pre-nup sent this into a downward spiral? I hate to speculate and the worst part about this story is the 10-year old that had to witness it all.

She apparently gave an incorrect address to 911. They likely would have been able to save her if she had known the address, but of course she can't be blamed for that.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Kelly Ecker Samson, who was shot and killed by her husband Dr. George "Scott" Samson hours after their wedding, gave dispatchers the wrong address to the couple's home when she called 911 for help, police said.

Before dawn Sunday, an argument between the newlyweds apparently led Dr. Samson to pull a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol on his bride and shoot her in the head and chest, according to police investigation.

A wedding guest stated that Samson became irritated during the Saturday reception and left without his wife, police said. Later that evening, guests who'd gathered at the couple's home for an after party told police they noticed the couple wasn't talking; the last guest to leave even asked Kelly if she wanted to go with her.

Kelly declined.

About 1:20 a.m. Sunday, Kelly called 911 and told a dispatcher that her husband was threatening to kill her. She gave her address as 4205 N. Creal St., but before the dispatcher could verify the address, the call was dropped.

Police said the address Kelly had given them was not showing up in the mapping system used by Vigo County dispatchers, and since Kelly didn't have "smart 911" enabled on her phone, the call couldn't be tracked.

Kelly tried calling back dispatch three more times. On her first attempt, only silence came over the line. During her second attempt, she repeated the address she'd given dispatchers before, and said her husband had "battered her" and that "he had guns in the house."

In Kelly's final call to dispatch, 4205 N. Creal St. address was given once more, and then the sounds of screams and what the dispatcher believed to be gunshots.

According to a police report, deputies arrived at the Samson's actual address, 4025 N. Creal St., about 15 minutes after the first 911 call was made. The house was unmarked, which made it difficult for authorities to locate the right address.

When police entered the home, Samson's father said his son had "gathered multiple rounds of ammunition, and fled into the basement." Kelly's son and mother-in-law were also in the house, and were immediately evacuated by police.

Police found Kelly dead in a bedroom.

Not knowing if the rest of the house was secure, police called in the Terre Haute Police Department Special Response Team. They used a remote camera to look into the basement, where they saw Dr. Samson unresponsive. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

I thought it automatically came up with your address from 911

If you arguing on your wedding day . . .. you should not get married

Seems like they fell out of love between the time the invites went out and the day
Maybe did not want the embarrassment of postponing or cancelling . . .
I dunno but I wish they had worked it out some other way

But we want the police to be transparent, and not hide anything, right?

911 calls, affidavits, emails, phone calls on city phones, laptop messages, dispatch's call notes, dash cams, etc. etc. are all public record.
