Great article! I really think he will be Houston's top athlete in the city in a few years. Name wise & accomplishments. Over Watt / Harden.
He may very well be the best Houston athlete in a year or 2, but as a baseball player he will never have the national recognition of a basketball star. And in Houston Texas he will never, ever, be as popular as JJ Watt if he keeps up his level. Football is next level popular in this town with casual sports fans. Having said that, in terms of actual on field greatness he could challenge Dream. His potential is off the charts, and like Watt he carries himself like a champ, which make him extremely easy to root for.
Ehhh........ JJ Watt is on pace to arguably be the best defensive player in NFL history..... going to be hard for Correa to pass that.
Starts the article by saying Correa can't be defined by numbers. Proceeds to list a bunch of numbers to describe Correa.
That's not at all what he said: The numbers that define Carlos Correa can't be calculated on your hard drive. Don't contain a single decimal point. Won't be found on any "league leaders" list. That's because the two numbers that define the Houston Astros' mesmerizing young shortstop are No. 3 and No. 1.
in the video interview Correa was gushing about meeting Steph Curry for the first time. What about Harden? Trade Correa to the Giants if he loves Curry so much.
Agreed. Correa will be up there though if he starts winning World Series here. Watt is just on another level right now. Nobody is even close to doing what he is doing.. That was a great article btw.
Wouldn't be so pessimistic on his potential here. Sure, he may never surpass Watt... But it wasn't that long ago that Texans regular season games were an afterthought when they were coinciding with Astros playoff games. (And I'm not merely looking at ratings). The Astros very well could take over this town for the summer months, and that momentum could easily extend into the fall. You couple a long playoff run, and Correa breaking out, and he will very well become an athlete the city could get behind in droves (more so than any NBA player now, and close to Watt level... Maybe more so given the Latin influence). Actually, most cities that have a baseball and basketball team find the baseball team garnering more local talk interest currently (unless the basketball team is one of the top 3 contenders). That includes Toronto, DC, NY (both teams), DFW, Chicago, LA, Philly (quite a few top 10 media markets there).
I'm not sure that more Houstonians could name the last time the Astros made the playoffs than could recognize Watt right now. Not saying Correa couldn't pass Watt, but he would have to be the best player in MLB and the Astros will have to win at least one world series before it is a contest. There are just a lot of football only fans in Houston.
Understandable. Was mainly referring to the comparison that he couldn't be more popular than a really good NBA player. Baseball has the advantage of being the only sport around for a good chunk of the summer (whereas nearly half of the NBA season competes with football, whether it's the season itself, free agency or the draft). Watt wasn't around when the Astros were going to the WS, and they had the entire city by the balls. If the Texans don't experience some tangible success...while it still won't vault baseball over football in any way... Carlos and the Astros will garner more and more fans and could definitely get this to being a very good baseball town again (as it really did get there following MMP's arrival).
That's the main reason I think it could never happen. There are a massive amount of people who care about football, and only football. They won't suddenly start caring about the Astros because they are good, although the Astros will win over plenty of fans if they keep winning. And if you took a national poll and asked people who do you know amoung casual fans Harden or Trout, Harden would be more recognizable despite Trout being on a GOAT trajectory.
