Here's an article speculating that Drexler could become the next Blazers coach if Dunleavy is shown the door. http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/oregonian/index.ssf?/blazers/oregonian/sp_12drex06 .frame ------------------ [This message has been edited by Cold Hard (edited May 06, 2001).]
LOL! Coach Drexler was terrible for 2 seasons with the Cougars, and it wasn't all lack of talent. Of course, at this point Portland's not a good opportunity for a coach, since its basically an aging team with no chemistry or cap room, whose "name" talent isn't producing. So maybe they don't have any better options to coach. ------------------ I'm about to boldly go where many men have gone before.
They would probably be working on their second ring right about now had they hired, say, Chuck Daly last year. Or what about Bob Hill? Heck, Brian Hill would be better than Dunleavy.
I don't think Dunleavy should be blamed for this team underacheiving. And when did Magic say he would be interested in Detroit? During the Lakers game today he seemed to just dismiss it. ------------------
Oops...true, he dismissed Detroit because he said something to the effect that it would be hard on him to coach at home. I just posted what I heard on NBC, guess I wasn't listening very carefully ------------------
The overwhelming majority of fans in Portland are not blaming Dunleavy for the team's failures. Trader Bob is the target. Most think that Dunleavy was set-up to fail by Whitsitt's disregard for chemistry. Reportedly, Dunleavy was told who to play,(Kemp, Strickland, Schremp) against his wishes. They are also upset with trading Grant (a fan favorite) for Kemp and also to a lesser extent, the O'neal for Davis deal. The disappointing season combined with some other PR mistakes have fans pretty disgruntled. Drexler is very popular in Portland and very well could be as much as a PR move as anything else if he is interested.
If Clyde decided to coach the Blazers..... O man, I would hate that. ------------------ Sorry Clutch; I had to copy the recap headline "the Mo and Fro Show" into my username cause I loved it!
I know Clyde Drexler's Little Sis.. (Shes A Big Gurl) Anyways.. she's a lesbian; and she said that Clyde left the cougars cause He and a Player got caught.. messing around. Yes He is.. if you're asking yourself that question. ------------------ When I was Little I call in a local sports show and told them the Rockets should Trade Otis Thorpe for a Lottery Pick. They found me to be stupid.
I know people, especially in the NBA, have a way of changing their minds, but according to ESPN, Drexler doesn't want the coaching spot. Good move, I think. ------------------
I wonder if the Portland papers will be starting rumors of Drexler taking Whitset's job... ------------------ All work and no play makes Band Geek Mobster a dull boy. You have got to be biggest idiot I've ever heard of in my life. Clyde's married, with 3 kids, and is about as gay as Richard Simmons is straight. NEVER post here again, loser... ------------------ Don't EVER underestimate the heart of "Air" Bullard!!!
Found the following on netscape's page NBA: Magic Interested in Blazers' Coaching Job http://sportsline.netscape.com/ns/ce/multi/0,1511,3884108,00.html May 11, 2001 Magic says he could help Blazers win title; Drexler not interested in coaching SportsLine.com wire reports PORTLAND, Ore. -- Magic Johnson would like another shot at coaching in the NBA with Portland. Former Trail Blazers star Clyde Drexler isn't interested. "They've played very well the last three years, but it hasn't been enough," Johnson told The Oregonian. "They need to be pushed harder, and I think I know how to get them to the next level, which is a championship." Johnson, a bust as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers after he helped them win five NBA titles as a player, said that some of the people mentioned for the job could have a hard time commanding the respect of a team filled with veterans. "The question is: Are the (players) going to respect him?" Johnson told the newspaper. "They need someone they can respect, and they need someone who can be a leader. I don't see how many of the (potential candidates) could get that respect." Johnson, 41, said he has not been contacted by Blazers president Bob Whitsitt. Out of respect to fired coach Mike Dunleavy, Johnson is not planning to initiate any discussion with Whitsitt. "If Bob calls, I'll definitely take the call," said Johnson, who is vice president and part owner of the Lakers. "The common goal is winning, and I think I know how to do that." The Oregonian Drexler's name near the top of a list of possible successors to Dunleavy, who was fired on Tuesday. But Drexler told two Houston radio stations that he's only interested in returning to the NBA in a front-office capacity. "I've heard (the rumors) too, and I'm not sure where they came from," Drexler told KTRH-AM. "I'd like to be a part-owner, if not a primary owner, or run a team as general manager," he said. "Those are the only positions I desire in the NBA." He also made similar comments to KILT-AM in Houston. Possible candidates to replace Dunleavy include John Lucas, the former Spurs and 76ers coach; Lakers assistant coach Jim Cleamons; former Pacers assistant Rick Carlisle; and Clippers assistant Dennis Johnson. Dunleavy was fired nine days after the Blazers were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers. It was the first time in 12 years Portland failed to win a postseason game. Dunleavy, who had a 190-106 record in four seasons, had one year left on his contract. Whitsitt said he has been contacted by several people interested in the job, and that he hopes to have a new coach by the June 27 draft. Drexler, 38, played 11½ seasons with the Blazers before being traded to the Houston Rockets in 1995. He holds virtually all of Portland's team records, and is arguably the most popular player in the franchise's history. Drexler and Whitsitt had their differences, but before the team retired his jersey during a March 6 ceremony at the Rose Garden, Drexler said he would like to return to the team in some capacity, fueling rumors that he could replace Dunleavy. However, Drexler's only coaching experience came at his alma mater, Houston, which went 19-39 during his two seasons. Johnson's only stint as a head coach ended with a 5-11 record and resignation from the Lakers in 1994. During that brief experience, Johnson admitted that he had little tolerance for those who couldn't play at the same level he did.
