This is not a thread for debating the reality, cause, or policy response to climate change. It's just a thread about disasters that might be influenced by a changing climate-the kind of stuff that doesn't quite fit into the random disaster thread or the weather thread.

Here's a scary graph from Canada:

Why is it climate related? Is it related to El Niño?

Younger Dryas and Bolling Allerod were some pretty wild times.

The recent Ice Age floods in the scablands of the Pacific Northwest are absolutely mind boggling in size and speed. We still don't really have even a vaguely decent understanding of the causes of the ice age flooding. Some theories but it's very uncertain.

Sigh. I guess it was too much to ask.

    I'll soldier on though.

Here's Puerto Rico today. People will die because of the high heat, high humidity, and the incomplete recovery from past hurricanes.[IMG]
The heat is caused in part because of a wavy jet stream and a sub-tropical stream that usually asserts itself only during the winter.
The wavy jet stream is likely caused by decreasing differences in temps between the tropics and the arctic. It's one of the things we've seen over the past few years that really jack with our ability to make wildland fire forecasts as accurately as we have in the past.

All that (and more) combines to pull Saharan dust and hot air across the Atlantic and trap it over Puerto Rico.
It's enhanced by the warmer ocean waters and the energy released by a developing El Nino. All that creates a dire global outlook for the near term and of course, a bad day and likely week for Puerto Rico.

The Kansas wheat crop is the lowest since the Eisenhower administration intentionally lowered production. Because of drought, it's so low that Kansas flour mills will be importing wheat from Eastern Europe.

One of the theories but they still don’t know how many or how often the mega flooding events occurred.

edit...sorry I was meaning to say we don't know how that much ice melted so rapidly

I recently listened to a video from Nick Zentner discussing some of his recently epiphanies around these floods.

I like the climate tie-in there, but it's a bit too much D&D for this thread.

Dude dropped out of Mississippi State aka the Harvard of greater Starkville, but at least he was majoring in "Broadcast Meteorology." Thanks, but I'll get my info from the people who do the science and issue the forecasts that he parrots. Also, the folks I follow don't care about clicks or merch (that said, I do have an official NWS cap).

:D I never had any clue discussing weather could be so highfalutin.

I can see how his style is a bit too youtube and in your face with his delivery, but I don't see anything wrong with the content.

Anyhow, care to share the people you follow?

I resonate with your settings in general, but I'm not sure what you wanted in a Hangout thread on this topic.
Are we supposed to find similarly depressing stats and images and post those here? Usually people head for D&D for the depressing stuff.

I for one like some of the historical climate stuff in particular, and I don't think it minimizes our current mess.

Speaking of that we need more emojis on here! *fire emoji*

But for real I thought he wanted stuff that was more like that. I’ve got some really boring stuff that I watch that I can share *crying laughing emoji*
