I disagree with those saying even if we pay his salary we can't move him. I would assume it will take a HUGE commitment from Uncle D but it can be done and here is why: 1) American League teams would be willing to bank on his offense coming back with the rest he would get not playing defense. This is actually one of the main reasons I want him gone, I expect the guy will hit next season but even so his defense is killing the team as evidence by the last week or so. An AL team would be willing to give him a DH slot with the thought that is all he'd have to worry about, see the ball hit the ball. 2) The guy would be relatively cheap, Uncle D would have to swallow hard on about 28-30 million of his salary but that would leave between 6-8 million or two years for a team needing a DH. That is an outstanding price tag for a contender to add quality hitting depth. As I've stated, I don't expect much in return but the point is opening up the spot for guys like Jack Shuck, BB and JD Martinez. 3) For all that Carlos Lee doesn't do, he is also not a cancer in the locker room. Unlike guys like Zambrano and Soriano who have crazy contracts but are issues in the clubhouse, Lee is a jolly fat dude who just rather not play defense anymore. He won't cause any issues and I think would be happy getting paid while hitting the ball. Saying all that, he will have a limited no trade clause and could use it smartly by blocking teams he knows will need his services in the AL. I could see a Boston making a play for him, Chicago W/Sox certainly need offense and Minnesota could make a move for him.
This part made me grin. :grin: Good post in general; I believe the reason we simply won't see that happen is that the Astros have already eaten considerable chunks of other salaries. I don't see them paying $25M for a prospect.
Look at the bright side. If you take out New York, he is only the 2nd highest paid player in the majors.
If we permanently move him to another location too quickly, the massive change in weight from one city to another could cause the earth to wobble off it's axis. I'm afraid we're stuck with him.
Agreed...I just don't see Uncle D swallowing that much of a contract...doesn't make business sense, but if you're committed to youth, then you do it, especially if he's a cancer, which he's not...anything south of $20MM then i could see something possibly happening, but that's a long shot...
I don't even see it for that. There are only two years left on Lee's deal after this (IIRC). Odds are he hits better next year than this--he simply *can't* suck *that* bad. He won't be 2006 good again, but he won't be a waste of O2 either. So, he rebounds a bit, looks decent at the plate next year, and someone picks him up at the deadline in either '11 or '12 for a A-baller or a PTBNL or a six-pack. It could happen. But this August, or this offseason, with the Astros eating *another* contract--I don't see that. At all.
Yea, should probably have been more specific, during the offseason will be hard but still don't think it's impossible yet the 2011 deadline maybe the easier time frame to get Caballo out of here when teams are desperate for bats during their stretch drive. Uncle D could eat less salary and contenders may be more willing to make the deal with the devil. This also represents the logically arrival time for JD Martinez, which is the clear successor.
He gets a pass. Not a Beltran fan after he left Houston, but he hadn't played baseball in over a year and came off major knee surgery. I'll still take Beltran over Lee any day
