Yeah Wes, I was lucky enough to be downsized from Morgan Stanley about 5 years ago after 10 years and was given a pretty sweet severance. So we bought a small house on two acres in the Catskill mountains about 3 hours north of the city. One of the best things I’ve ever done.

It is our little piece of heaven. Here’s a view from the deck.

Ok, now you're just being mean... :D

This is the kind of area I want to buy a home in in the future.

I am in the process of building a deck and I have bought most of my supplies so I should be able to give you an idea of how much it will cost for you to do it yourself. This will be the second deck I have built. It is time consumming, but not terrible difficult.

The deck I am building is 14 x 21 in total. It will have a slightly elevated area that is 10 x 10 with a pergola over just that area. I paid a little under $800 for the wood. It is being built mostly over an old concrete patio so I have spent another $200 for cement anchors and post bases so that I can keep the sleepers off of the ground. I will only need to dig 6 post holes. I have not purchased the cement yet so I do not know yet how much that will cost. I will also have the cost of renting a hammer drill and a heavy duty nail gun (the one I have is just for 2" brads so it cannot handle this job).

I desperately need a deck built in my backyard but I'm the most un-handy guy you'll ever meet. I'm looking to hire somebody for the job.

It turns out I actually don't have many pictures of my deck without about 4000 people on it for various parties. This one will have to suffice. It's a pic I took in a freak rainstorm when my backyard filled up like a pool, but you get an idea of what the deck looks like. The upper portion is 16' x 16' square, with a trellised roof. The lower deck is about 20' x 40' total with a built in bar, complete with a tiled top (not shown). Not as huge as mark's, but I have a bar... :D
