Now now....yes, Bud was a terrible owner throughout most of his time here, but, along with Lamar Hunt, he was a founder of the AFL and the originator of football in Houston.

Bob was one of the first six to named. He may have declined.

Although it makes me sick, I do think Bud Adams is deserving.

I think they should have put his name out a lot earlier than this so people could get use to the idea of him being honored. Anyone think he will be the only Legend to be booed during the show?

are we sure he is actually on the list..

this is in the article "It will be that kind of night. The only thing left to do is to rank them. So one guy will try -- with a couple of changes and apologies in advance:"

Maybe he added bud instead of bob mcnair in himself...

You guys are being ridiculous. Bud Adams brought pro football to Houston and that makes him deserving of being a Houston sports legend. If it wasn't for him, there would be no Oilers to take away in the first place. If you can't recognize that then you are not being objective.

I can understand that...BUT moving the team and then essentially giving the entire city the middle finger is not what legends are made of.

Actually, pro football probably would've come to Houston without Bud Adams. Certainly just the threat of the AFL got the NFL attempting to quickly fill the key AFL markets with NFL expansion teams. The Cowboys quickly came to Dallas, and attempts were made to put a team in Houston.

Apparently, two attempts to expand to Houston were made by the NFL as the AFL was forming. The first that would've taken the field in 1960 or 1961, and one a few years later. That later potential ownership group for Houston included John Mecom, who eventually ended up with the expansion team in New Orleans.

Of course, it was the pending formation of the AFL that pushed the NFL to start adding teams so quickly, so even if the NFL had been successful in putting a team in Houston and running the Oilers away (like the NFL successfully did in Dallas), Bud could take some credit for Houston having a team at all.

Now, I don't have a problem with Bud being honored since he was the one who was successful getting the Oilers up and running, as well as helping to get the League started and strong enough to force the merger. He does deserve some degree of credit for that.

You're right. Being the 4th largest city no owner would've stepped in and created a franchise in this city.

After all, we're so small inconsequential compared to places like Jacksonville.

The Houston CMSA had a population of just under 1.4 million in 1960. Houston was the 7th largest city (not market) in the United States at the time.

Dallas/Fort Worth was nearly 1.2 million in 1960. The Twin Cities were at roughly 1.6 million in 1960.

Are they going to televise the Salute to the Superbowl?

I checked TV guide.com and I didn't see it listed. They are calling it the opening ceremony and the first of its kind so it seems that they would show it on TV. Has anyone heard anything about it?

BUD broke my heart when took the Oilers to Tenn. I boycotted the NFL for years until we got a team.

Forget about Bud Adams...Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens being on there is a joke. Every other team athlete on that list (save for Slater Martin) at least played or coached for a Houston sports team. Where's Kevin Bass? Mike Scott?

...and somebody PLEASE tell me that the worst QB in the history of the universe, Dan Freaking Pastorini, is not on that list...
