To be fair, maintenance costs on solar is pretty dang low. However the production of solar panels degrades over time. The industry rule of thumb is 1% per year. So if it makes $100 million worth of electricity in year 1, it'll make $60 million worth (real dollars) by year 40. I don't know how they modeled this $100 million exactly, but I've gotta say the siting is less than ideal. It's close to markets in California, but pretty far from demand for much of the stretch across the desert. There will be line losses transmitting electricity from the border to a city. And did they count the costs of building that transmission?
I think it's exactly as @RayRay10 says. Trump puts his name on everything, this is his legacy issue. To be fair, every president has that one issue that they want to be their legacy, their defining stamp on the country and history...this is his. He chose a really bad hill to die on.

All those people are getting conned.Trump promises that Mexico is paying for it, then it turns out that Americans are paying for it. Poor Trump. Needs to beg for donations in order to get his objectives completed.
Wouldn't the panels need to be replaced by the end of that 40 year period? And what about maintenance cost? Also, what about the cost of the gold plating that Trump will obviously want on the wall?
