Where would Harper be on the Astros? 4th best player? Altuve, Correa, Bergman in some order, then Harper? Based on not looking up any statistics at all, I’d rather have all those guys.

 

Bregman is the only guy I’d definitely rather have than Harper for the next 13 years. I’m not sure how Altuve is going to age and Correa has that back injury.

I meant as it stands now. Altuve 13 years from now will be pretty old. I’d take Bregman for sure over Harper. If Correa can give me a healthy season, I’d take him as well.

 

No. Bregman is entering his age 25 season. He won’t be a free agent until prior to his age 29 season. If he waits until then he will probably be looking at a 6 or 7 year deal (which by then I would guess would put him the $200M-250M range), and that’s only if he remains on a HoF trajectory. A 10 year extension (starting next season) worth ~$250M makes some sense if Houston wants to lock him up long term.

You’re not sure how altuve is going to age? Wtf does that mean?

 

As he gets older, will he retain his foot speed? His hand speed? Will the 40 or so ludicrous "Altuve hits" he gets a year eventually turn into grounders and flares to the IF? Haven't even mentioned defense yet.

Big money teams see the money as very relevant depending on their payroll structure, especially in the first years. Can't pay everybody 20M a year. Nobody likes the tax and they plan ahead for it.

All the “megadeals” to this point were signed by guys already in their 30’s. A-Rod’s $275M contract covered his age 32-41 seasons. The difference between that and Harper’s contract that covers his age 26-38 seasons cannot be overstated.

Edit: just realized you’re referencing the deal he signed with the Rangers for $252M. That deal, as big as it was and despite the fact that Texas had to pay some down, was not that bad. But if you want to compare that to Harper’s, this article might shed some light:

That's more to due with the Rangers brilliant strategy to win without competent pitching. A-Rod was amazing for the duration of the 10 years he initially signed with Texas.

 

Yes, but unless you are NY, Boston or LA, it's very hard to build a team when so much of your money is going to one player.

 

It’s not crazy. But you don’t know how anyone will age. Altuve isn’t at a higher risk of aging poorly than any other superstar. Or for that mater any other player. And don’t tell me you don’t know if he’ll keep getting hits. If anything his style of play is more sustainable than a power hitter.
