HOUSTON -- Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell said Monday he and the team should complete negotiations in the next couple of days on a contract extension.

Bagwell has one year left on his contract and wanted to have everything settled before the season starts.

He told Houston television station KRIV that he and the Astros are on the same page.

Bagwell said moves the Astros made in the offseason helped fuel his desire to negotiate a long-term contract.

"I talked about them showing me some things that could make us a better club," he said. "They might not be blockbuster deals; writers and people may say we really didn't do anything. I think we improved our club a lot."

A trade with Detroit brought catcher Brad Ausmus and relievers Doug Brocail and Nelson Cruz to the Astros. The team also signed free agent reliever Mike Jackson.

"We made ourselves a better club and so that part of my equation has kind of been settled," Bagwell said. "I see us going in a positive direction."

Bagwell finished the season with a .310 average and had career highs in almost every offensive category. He hit 47 home runs, third in the NL, had 132 RBI and scored a club record 152 runs, the most since Chuck Klein of the Philadelphia Phillies scored 158 in 1930.

I suspect this finally makes Ward expendable.

First of all, no way are the stros going to even be close to getting to the playoffs.
playin in enron, they should have gotten some serious starting pitching.

actually, the stros got robbed in the ausmus deal. one of the reasons i stopped liking the stros was because of the stupid front office moves. Meleusky is going to be TEN TIMES the catcher ausmus WAS. Ausmus is over the hill.

what would have been smart was...
    1. trade bagwell to a contending AL team needing a 1B. example, to red sox for starting pitching and wilton veras. or to yankees for andy pettite and alfonso soriano.

    2. trade one of the outfielders for some more pitching. pitching is key in enron.

but as usual, the stros made a terrible move and failed to add pitching. another 90 loss season for the stros.

The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?
