have you heard the idea that these great national architectural monuments are just an indication of the excess and decay underneath their patron societies? so much money was thrown into these things...

the idea is that whenever that much money is thrown at a project, the country, the business, etc. has jumped the shark in its effectiveness in exchange for a visible construct of the ego's wet dream.

not sure, but perhaps someone can graph the decline of:

roman empire and the acqueducts, colloseum, pantheon, etc.
china and the great wall, forbidden palace
incan civilization and machu picchu
cambodia and angkor wat
france and versailles
enron and enron tower
chrysler and chrysler building

so on.

i voted for the pyramids but upon reconsidering, asthetically it would have to be macchu picchu for ancient architecture and for 'modern':
