But that's the point... most users don't have firewire to begin with, and most users don't care about the size difference. The size difference only comes to play when you're carrying around with you, and gee, we know millions of people that jog around have to have those 6 GB $400 MP3 players.

I'd buy the Nomad for $229 before I shell out another $200 so I can get something a bit smaller and transfer files over firewire.

Just two months ago, I paid $350 for the Compaq iPaq...64 MB.

    Isn't technology great?

I have had a MP3 CD player for over a year now. Each CD holds about 10 hours worth of music on it. Sure I have to burn the CDs, but that is not a big problem. The thing cost me $115 when I first bought it, and the prices for these things are way down now. I don't really feel I need more than 10 hours worth of music at any one time, and the only time I listen to music away from my stereo and computer is in my car, so it doesn't need to be "jogging-proof" or any other feature this iPod might boast. I really don't think this product sounds like it is worth its price...not right now.

Except it's only for Mac users and most of them have firewire or will when they upgrade to get hardware that will run Mac OS X.1

And Dr., it's designed to be mobile. That means (all togather now) "SIZE DOES MATTER".

    :)

    Me too. But's he's cool.

Hey look---Apple users have proved themselves willing to pay more to be different. This isn't a revolutionary device--some of it's features are new and different--but it's like Apple hardware : something an apple fan would be willing to pay for.

If it doesn't meet your needs or likes---well that's cool too.

Well, dammit, I'm a Mac user (hehe) and I still don't understand it. Oh well. I just cruised through several Mac newsgroups this morning and the party lines are forming. There're very few people riding the fence. At the moment it's the "hey, that's cool, I gotta get me one" crowd vs. the "you've got to be kidding me; I'm not paying that much for something that I can get cheaper!" crowd.

Oh well, to each their own... if it drops below $300, I'll definitely think about getting one, though. It does look sharp as I think Pole said. :)

It will. As with the iMac---Apple always starts a little high so it can take advantage of the early adopters--the must haves. You'll see the price at $349 in six months or so...

Why isn't it named something musical since it's music device? My guess is we'll see it expand or see other devices built off the concept that allow you to cart your iMovies around, your digital pictures for display on tv or monitors, your calendar...my guess this is that this is just a start...
