Bryant appers to have more upide now but even if he rakes in the majors, as long as Appel shows number 2-3 starter quality then it's a wash in terms of value. If we are going to do any hand-wringing, that would be on taking Aiken over Rodon. For a team of stat experts with a long history of data showing college pitchers being the safer picks, to gamble on a high school kid was a bit of a head scratcher.
On HS pitchers versus college pitchers, college pitchers have higher success rate in the majors, but the HS arms drafted early (not just 1-1) that have success have performed better. If a team has confidence in itself to draft wisely, a HS pitcher should not be excluded from 1-1 solely for being a HS pitcher.
Can I have your baseball card? Will it come with a stick of gum that tastes like its freshness date was 1999?
We get two pages in the Astros forum, it isn't like the GARM. This is a worthy discussion and it's proven to be with all the replies here. Just use threads that are already open for it. Again, we have a Jeff Luhnow thread which would have been a perfect place to discuss this. Can't wait for the Astros to be really good, but it sure is gonna bring in some nut jobs to the Astros forum unfortunately
Nah. Bryant is the real deal. Can't thank the Astros org enough for passing up on him. Appel wouldn't have been a bad pick for us, but I'd much rather have Bryant now.
Funny thing is, even if you are right and Bryant is better than McPherson Yall will still be the cubs
There's also a lot of data on college pitchers who throw a lot of innings go on to either early arm trouble/surgery in the majors, or just not a lot of overall success. Projecting these guys is a truly inexact science... I don't think the "decision sciences" department was really cut-out to predict the future (more to over-analyze the present), despite what the SI article claimed.
Na, we love the Astros and we love being Astros fans If we were miserable fans, we would have to find another teams message board to go to
Astros and Jeff Luhnow are despicable for keeping Springer down for so long. I can't believe they're saying he's not ready for the majors. What a travashamockery!!! Spoiler
I'm holding my breath for a Peter Gammons article on how the Cubs are cheating the system and their front office should be ashamed of themselves.
IIRC, didn't Springer keep his mouth shut and just play ball while he was toiling in the minors while he waited for his shot? If anything, Epstein should start him the minors to teach him some humility.
Yeah it must be that. Haha. Part of me thinks this is just Boras in his ear. Haven't heard comments like these at all until recently when Boras questioned the Cubs, now Bryant is speaking up about it. Scott Boras really is one of the worst agents out there.
