I just switched from AOL for broadband ($44.95/month) via Roadrunner to Roadrunner. Unbelieveable!!!

1 Starting last week, you can now get AOL for free with Roadrunner. Yes, I said free! No BYOA for $14.95/month. The "catch" is you get absolutely no tech support from AOL at all. Waaah!

2 My downloads speeds exploded right before my eyes. I had an AOL and a Roadrunner guy on the phone at the same time. A few seconds after they told me the change was made, I closed AOL on my computer. My BitComet downloads went from ~80KB/sec to zero and I thought there was a problem. Then right before my eyes, my downloads went to over 300KB/sec in a matter of 30 seconds. I am one happy camper now.

I resented having to boot up AOL in order to connect to the internet and I constantly lost connections and had to restart AOL on a regular basis in order to browse the web. Funny thing was my downloads would keep downloading while Firefox wouldn't connect.

At first, all I intended to do was question the AOL guy to see if I could keep my 14 year old email address if I cut AOL off. That prompted him to tell me about the new free AOL with Roadrunner. Now I have the best of both worlds: My longtime email address with ridiculous connections speeds. There was a thread a couple of months ago where people posted their connection speeds using http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/. I felt like weakling. Now I can proudly say I'm at 3447kbps!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

P.S. You can call AOL at 800 827 6364 to make the switch. The AOL person will call Roadrunner and you will do a three-way conversation to complete the switch. Took about 20 minutes and I didn't need to restart or reboot my computer or modem. At the end, the AOL recommended that I turn my modem off for 15 seconds to reset it. I haven't yet.
