So I have an HR question for you HR types as well... where I'm working they're telling me that because I have a bachelor's they want to now pay me half of what they agreed to pay me when I started the job... It's my second day and they are just now telling me this... I've written the high ups to document this and now they're trying to "resolve" it but haven't said how or when they will do this. Any advice on how to handle this?
This - assuming you got an offer letter. If you did not get an offer letter, I would recommend asking for one immediately. However, don't be surprise if it is different from what you were promised verbally. Whatever the case, I would look for a new job. It's a crappy organization that doesn't have compensation finalized before a person starts.
Doesn't sound like much of a job. If all of this was verbal, just move along. If they are not honoring something that was in writing, move along as well.......but talk to an attorney.
That's a little confusing. 1. If you lied about your degree, just be happy they didn't fire you on the spot. If the money is insufficient now, work and look for a better paying job at the same time. 2. If you didn't lie, insist on the agreed salary. Perhaps refuse to work until the salary question is resolved. 3. Find a new employer. Even if you ultimately get your way, you don't want an employer who pulls something like that. 4. If you're in Texas, I'm guessing you have no legal recourse.
Your interview should have tipped you off. Future Boss: Do you have a degree? You: Yes. I have a Bachelor's Degree. Future Boss: Oh, you the smarty art *****, huh? You the smarty art *****. Let me ask you this. Let me ask you this. Can you kick my ass?
No I didn't lie about my degree. My bosses said they just were informed by HR that there is a pay grade policy they didn't know about (for years they haven't used such a policy).
Half sounds a bit extreme... Sounds like a crap company. Mind if we ask what industry you are in and what type of job it is? What is your title?
Your initial offer must have been huge for them to cut half and still think you can pay your bills. An average salary cut in half is dicey to live on without scrimping and cutting thing from the budget.
Update? Seriously, I'd be too offended to go to work until it was resolved. But, you might not have the financial wherewithal to do that. (Honestly, I don't either, but I'd borrow from family or something.)
unfortunately, unless you have a signed contract (not just an offer letter). A company is not legally obligated to have a job for you tomorrow at any salary (whether you've been there 1 hour or 20 years). Express my displeasure, take what they give me and continue my hunt for another job. While what they are doing may be legal it's certainly not ethical, but it is easier to get a job if you have a job.
