[AMC] Two new shows coming; Turn, and Halt & Catch Fire

Both look intriguing. With Breaking Bad coming to an end and Mad Men closing next season; I am looking forward to new AMC material.

The network that found great success with period prestige drama is sticking to the past. AMC announced that it ordered two new shows to series today in conjunction with their Television Critics' Association panel and both trade on nostalgia.

This, Philiana Ng of The Hollywood Reporter, is the first time AMC "has picked up more than one series in the same cycle," and both sound intriguing. Halt & Catch Fire rides the bandwagon of shows—a lá The Americans—that force their actors to wear 80s clothing. It's a story, starring Lee Pace late of Pushing Daisies and a bunch of other stuff, of the personal computing boom in Texas' Silicon Prairie. That's not an inherently fascinating subject, so we'll have to see how compelling this turns out to be.

The title suggests that the show, which has Breaking Bad pedigree in producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein, might be pretty insider-y. It is, according to Screen Rant, "a term for a computing code specifically designed to destroy a machine’s CPU." Then again, prove to us you knew what "breaking bad" meant before the show.

The other show goes way farther back historically, taking you to America in the Revolutionary War. The show focuses on a farmer, played by Jamie Bell (a.k.a. Billy Elliot all grown up), who joins up with the Culper Ring, described as an "unlikely group of spies." The show is written by Craig Silverstein of network fare like Bones and Nikita. Revolutionary War seems like pretty untrodden territory for the medium—if you discount John Adams—so whether people will want to tune in every week to watch a fight for independence is up in the air.

The shows act as something of a changing of the guard for AMC, which also used TCA as a Breaking Bad farewell tour.

AMC has been on fire the last couple of years. Probably the best channel on T.V hands down, especially since HBO has lost its touch apart from GOT

Turn sounds really good.

Halt and Catch Fire sounds like crap.

Naw, there were like a couple of good episodes in the first season but it didn't turn out like everybody wanted it to. House of Cards trumps it, I classify them as sort of in the same group.

The Killing was one of the AMC shows that was dumb though, never got into it.

Yep, Boardwalk is awesome. True Blood is also interesting again this season. Veep wasn't bad either this past season.

I enjoy Newsroom for what it is. I also like the media perspective.

House of Cards is just straight ballin' though. Great show.

The Culper Spy Ring was an American spy network operating during the War of American Independence that provided George Washington with information on British troop movements. In November 1778, George Washington appointed Major Benjamin Tallmadge as director of military intelligence, charged with creating a spy ring in New York City, the site of British headquarters.

This network became known as the Culper Spy Ring and operated successfully in and around New York City for five years, during which time no spy was ever unmasked. Indeed even Washington was ignorant of the spies' identities. Tallmadge's informants consisted of friends he made at school on Long Island, including Austin Roe, Caleb Brewster, Abraham Woodhull, and Anna Strong.

Though Woodhull was Tallmadge's chief agent, Robert Townsend was an important informant who posed as a Loyalist coffee-shop owner and merchant while working as a society journalist. As a reporter Townsend was able to obtain information from the British at society gatherings.

In order to safeguard the identity of his spies, Tallmadge utilized a number of protective measures. Tallmadge gave his informants pseudonyms and invented a numerical substitution system to identify his informants rather than use names. Seven hundred and sixty-three numbers were used, with 711 denoting General Washington, 745 representing England and 727 for New York. Tallmadge and his associates also wrote in invisible ink.

I consider myself pretty conservative on most issues. I love Newsroom, its great TV IMO.

I was able to catch season one of Halt and Catch Fire on Netflix, and thought it was pretty great. It had some added drama I didn't care for, but as a geek - I loved all of the tech stuff.

Enjoy it while it lasts, that season finale clocked in at 500,000 viewers. I think they finally acknowledged that old and/or angry men talking about desktops was less sexy than hot chicks discussing online gaming.
