On my way to work I was thinking a haven't heard many new guitarists or bands with remarkable guitarists in the last decade or so. Granted I am not in the loop as much as I used to be. I was thinking about my 5 favorite guitarists, not saying they are "the best"--I am not an expect musician and music, is well, art, anyway. Art is best not quantified (who's the best), but I think it is ok to pick some favorites.

Before my list a few more qualifications, I really haven't heard enough of BB King, Buddy Guy or many other older blues fellas to judge them fairly. I know Clapton is great as well, but for me he just didn't blow the doors down like these others. Anyway, here is my list:

#5 The Edge (probably shouldn't be this high, probably should put Jimmy Page here, but oh well. I know the Edge in classical skills he isn't comparable, but I just love his sound.)

#4 Randy Rhodes & Eddie Van Halen
(these two stand out to me from the heavy metal and hard rock crowds, Eddie really could make a guitar talk like no other. Rhodes was just unbelievable, more creative in my mind than Hammett.

    #3 Stevie Ray Vaughan
    (fantastic show, just by himself)

#2 Billy Gibbons. (So smooth, so jammin, so everthing. Could be more urban legend than fact, but #1 said Gibbons was the best guitarist he ever heard. I'll be commuting home the next few days listening to Houston's finest)

#1 Jimi (not much to elaborate here, words don't do justice)

Can't rank them in any order, cuz I like them all very much, but here goes....

    Jimmie Vaughan
    Freddie King
    Billy Bremner
    Mike Bloomfield
    Albert Collins

    Buddy
Eric (nothing against clapton, but I'm talking about Johnson)
    Jimi
    Jimmy
    Stevie

Buddy probably shouldn't be here, but I just love his music. Same with Jimmy, but Zep will always be my favorite. Both Erics are awesome, but clapton is the better singer, Johnson the better player. I have no words within me to describe my feelings for Stevie.

Stevie said his brother was the best guitar player he ever heard. I like Jimmie, but he doesn't make my top five. Billy Gibbons is awesome, but they've gotten so far away from their roots, I can't give him a nod. B.B. is pretty awesome too. If any of you get a chance to see Shaver here in Houston, you'll hear a real treat in Billy Joe Shaver's son; the kid is awesome!

Dang, there was this awesome jazz guitarist I saw in Houston around 93, I am forgetting (played in a small club, also can't remember its name, but it is north of W. Gray). I think he was Stevie something (I believe “S" is in one of his names), often played 2 guitars at one time. Very cool, maybe you have caught him at that show or on Austin City Limits. Again though, can't remember his name.

    Excellent choices guys/gals!

I'll add Dave Matthews, acoustic only.

Also Tim Reynolds. Listen to Stream on Disc 2 of Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds Live at Luther College, it's amazing what he does with an acoustic, IMO. (Keep in mind that I don't know much about guitars)

The best I've seen live is Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.

Carlos Santana - a little latin flavor!

    Steve Vai

Johnny Lang - this 20 year old blues guitarist is a BAD BAD man. Check out the album "Wander This World"

Stanley Jordan was the name of the fellow I couldn't remember. If you ever get a chance to see him, do it.

That's the end of the discussion for me, you guys can debate the rest of them.

Not the fastest, or most technically difficult, but his ability to bend and draw the notes out made him beethoven with a guitar.
