A low turnout almost always helps the fringe candidates and it's a similar thing that happened with Trump despite really high turnout in the GOP primaries you had that vote splintered 17 ways so that means a candidate with a fairly small but loyal following can win....and that's how Trump gained traction in the GOP primary and what ultimately propelled him to victory. If there were only 2 candidates and a high turnout, he'd have gotten buried early and been forced to drop out.

When it comes to our young socialist, she managed to barely eek by the incumbent due to really small turnout overall but a high turnout of her people. If Crowley wants to hold on to his job, I think he could crush her in the actual election just by getting her to admit her positions and her desire to see capitalism ultimately fall. She's just too far out there to get large support even in one of the bluest of blue districts with that kind of rhetoric....which is why she's avoided saying anything specific about what she stands for.

She's an expert in being an attractive 28 year old socialist that is capable of fooling stupid people into supporting her despite the fact that she seemingly knows absolutely nothing at all and her ideas would only harm the country.

I wish we were celebrating her win in November, rather than her primary win. I think she's refreshing. The Right must find her threatening, or there wouldn't be as many memes floating around already for people like Crash to find and run with. I hope the Democratic Party has more candidates like her running this Fall. I just wish we could get rid of Pelosi, who's a millstone around our necks that I wish had left already. My opinion is that after getting a majority in the House, Pelosi will be replaced, whether she likes it or not.

Again, I have no idea what you are basing any of this on.

She won comfortably first of all, by like 15 points. Second of all, she won in areas she wasn't even expected to win, which may suggest that some Crowley voters voted for her instead.

You are making a complete assumption that if more voters turned out they would have voted for him, I have granted it is entirely possible, it could very well be, but right now it is nearly impossible to know.

She won by 4000 votes in a district of 700k people. You are basing your entire opinion on an absolutely tiny turnout. I don't think an extremist candidate like Ocasio-Cortez would stand a chance if there was a decent turnout because there aren't THAT many socialists in any given district.

All 700k people are going to vote?
I'm basing my opinion on the fact that she won.

Your basing your entire opinion on something you can't even prove but a hope and a wish.

Again, unless you have actual data to prove that Crowley's supporters will...
    A.) Turnout
    B.) Vote for Crowley

I have no idea what you are basing your opinion on. That district is 70% latino...and the people that aren't latino are millennials...who apparently also voted for her.

Also, Crowley has thrown support behind her and doesn't want to run. His name is on the ballot by default.

Yeap. There is new energy around her. Some folks feel threaten by that. You can guess at the level based on attention on her, and on a personal level, based on personal attack on her.

No but it wouldn't take 700K, if 100K voted then she'd have no chance.

Now perhaps Crowley will roll over and let her take the district, but he could win it back if he wanted to. Either way, I'm pulling for her, she'll be a fun punching bag over the next 2 years.

You are right, the 70% number is including blacks and asians, which is something that every article about the election decided to bring up and I was recalling that.

    Based on what though?

The district is one of the bluest districts in the country, I'm just wondering what you are basing this on? You need to actually show that Crowley's supporters would come out and support Crowley.

I've just seen nothing even suggesting that. Everyone close to that race said she won running to the left of Crowley and that he tried to go further left but then she'd just hammer him for taking corporate money.

I just don't see it. I think if the turnout is higher you'll just see more votes for her. If this was a moderate swing district, yeah, sure, but this is one of the strongest blue districts in the country. I don't think they are any shy about putting her in Congress.

Based on the belief that there aren't that many extremists in any district. Again, Ocasio Cortez is a literal socialist who wants to see the economic system of the US fail.....While there would be a fringe group of Democrats who would support that, it wouldn't be THAT many.

Bobbie and cml, your Ocasio- Cortez derangement syndrome is interesting. It is is becoming obvious to an increasing number of Americans that democratic socialism ala Scandinavia just delivers better or the average American citizen the failed trickle down capitalism y'all believe in.
People are starting to like the idea of democratic socialism like Scandinavia more and more. High wages, pensions, free tuition, Medicare for All, long vacations for not just the few. Can't scare them that Scandinavia is going broke and repressive like Russia during Stalin. The internet and increased travel have let the cat out of the bag.

lol with the nativists and the folks who still fervently believe that the wealth will trickle down if the billionaires just receive enough tax breaks as Fox and friends, their propagandistic econ 101 courses and the biz press have long promised.

Yeah, just not true. You can continue to lie about her all you want but it won't stop her from getting support, so continue on.

    That's the thing right?

People can keep shouting "SOCIALISM! SOCIALISM!"

and everyday people see "What's wrong with free healthcare? I like that." or "Why should my kids have to go broke to get an education? I like that too"

When you have to lie about your opposition's position, you will lose in the end because all it says is that you can't counter her actual position so instead you make up complete fabrications like "She wants to see the US economy fail"

Her position is basically free everything and someone else will pay for it. That is 100% a recipe to make the US economy fail.

take away the tax preference/breaks/welfare given to the top 5%; the resultant increased tax revenue for the Gov can provide free healthcare and education for all.

a well-educated populace, w no fear of exorbitant health care cost, results in more high pay jobs and consumer consumption, which lead to more
    • payroll tax paid to the Gov
    • sales tax collected by the Gov

As with everything else, he's just pulling random thoughts out of his ass and trying to pass them off as facts...even though they're nothing more than farts in the wind.

Socialism sounds so good when you spell it out doesn't it? Too bad it has been proven to not work.

I am sorry people like you, glynch, and JayGoogle may to earn your own way by having to actually work for a living but that is the American way. We do not mind giving you a hand up if you fall on hard times but there is a fine line between a hand up and a hand out. As for the tax cut, well most every WORKING American got one.
