Ive been in the Market for a Car.Actually I just want a change.Currently I drive a 1996 Nissan Maxima SE which is this car: Spoiler This is not my car but this is EXACTALY how it looks. It has 243,xxx Miles and drives PERFECT.Just recently I found a guy who is willing to trade my car for this:A 1990 Nissan 300ZX Spoiler This is Not the car,but it basically looks just like this.It has 130,XXX miles and has an oil leak, but other than that its pretty solid.I was willing till the guy told me to throw in 500 with my car...What do you think?
I owned a 1990 for five years and while I did love the car, it was high maintenance. I had problems with the transmission, gearbox, turbo hoses, injectors leaking and the spark plugs are hard to change. Labor cost will usually be high bc it is a pain for anyone to work on. Not much room under the hood with twin-cams and supreme gas is not ideal either. Your experience could be different though. This is my car past her prime. She sat in my driveway for about a year until I sold it. I sold the car around 2006, it had 110,000 miles which is pretty damn good.
I should add that the engine and stock turbos were solid. In the winter the car would run high 13's in a qtr mile at Baytown raceway. I was always happy when winter came, I knew those turbos would stay cool and perform much better.
Ahhh okay I see....the 300ZX I saw was KINDA idling rough, but Im a car guy and a normal person wouldnt notice the idle I felt.Do you think its worth throwing in the 500?my Maxima is solid
Your car is worth around $1,500 to $2,500 tops. His car is worth $5000-$7000. Now think to yourself. Why would HE make that trade? You can already hear a problem with the car. Imagine the problems it might have that you can't hear (or see). The older 300s are high maintenance, especially if it has a turbo.
Well that is not good start if you are already hearing problems. Like I said they are high maintenance but they hold their value if running properly. A 1990 twin turbo in good condition can cost on average between 6000-1100 dollars depending on each car. I sold my for 2000 to a friend bc I knew it was going to cost more than 3000 to get it running. As codell mentioned it sounds a little shady.
I mean is had that kind of Idle that I think a tune-up should fix.But im thinking its fair trade straight up no cash.500 dollars for a car that I mechanically know nothing about + my car that I KNOW can make it to San Antonio and Dallas with no problems
Well that drops the price significantly, does not sound as shady now. Personally the non turbos were pretty sluggish and not fun the drive. I had one for a week so I can't speak about maintenance. I totaled it and then got a twin turbo, huge difference obviously. I would not do it personally bc I am not a mechanical guy and need a reliable car. RIP
Is your Nissan standard? Driving manual in Houston sometimes gets extremely tedious, but if you can deal with the traffic (and if the car is reliable), I'd trade in a heartbeat Good luck!
